Hi, this is my first time on a mailing list, so I hope I'm doing it
right. I am new to Linux, coming from windows. I need a low-latency
sound interface with no resampling (ex: no software volume control, no
software EQ, etc...), just like ASIO in windows. Somebody told me to
look into JACK.
I have an ESI Juli@ sound card, which seems to be supported under Linux.
Using ALSA and xmms I can easily hear the sound quality is inferior to
that of the sound quality in windows using winamp with an ASIO output
plugin (and the official esi drivers). All my music is ripped in FLAC
and I am using the Sennheiser HD650 headphones with a WooAudio 3 amp. I
have jack installed, as well as jackd, and the jack output plugin for
xmms. I have gotten basic sound out of jack by entering "jackd -d alsa"
into the konsole and selecting the "jack audio connection kit" as the
sound system and using the jack output plugin for xmms.
However I have a feeling it is not set up properly for low-latency
output with no resampling because it sounds exactly the same as ALSA,
and the software volume control in xmms and in the kmix is still
working. After doing some searching on google I have found that versions
of JACK 0.80 and under supported ASIO, but it was removed in later
versions. Do you know how I would need to set it up to get the
functionality I am looking for? And are there any newer music players
that support FLAC and JACK output?

JACK defaults to 48000Hz, and most people's music collection is 44100Hz.
Check what sample rate JACK is running at.
However I have a feeling it is not set up properly for
low-latency
output with no resampling because it sounds exactly the same as ALSA,
and the software volume control in xmms and in the kmix is still
working. After doing some searching on google I have found that versions
of JACK 0.80 and under supported ASIO, but it was removed in later
versions. Do you know how I would need to set it up to get the
functionality I am looking for? And are there any newer music players
that support FLAC and JACK output?
The kmix volume control is not software - it's the hardware volume
control of your card.
Try "aplay -D hw:0,0 file.wav". Does it still sound worse than Windows?
If so it could be a driver issue.
JACK's "ASIO mode" has nothing to do with this problem.

I use an RME card & external D/A's with Aqualung as a player running
under Jack. While not necessary at all for pure listening I run my

It's a bunch of ebuilds containing the latest versions of various
packages that are a bit behind in the main portage repository, and some
apps that aren't there at all. Take a look at

It is a VERY lightweight piece of software, as far as I can tell.
Few libraries that you won't have already, although they tend to want
fairly recent versions of the libraries.
The source is available here:

BTW: Aqualung has recently been reworked for good real-time
performance. It's working very well for me but it is alpha-level
software as far as these changes go.
Other recent changes in Aqualung include Album mode playback
including Album level shuffle play. Make a large list of albums and it
randomly picks one for you to listen too. I enjoy it.

GRR! I guess this is why people run Gentoo :-P
mainly for the audio overlay. getting stuff into mainline gentoo must be difficult enough
to have spawned all the existing overlays, and thats not counting the 30-day wait for arch
keywords..impatient users must make a script to unmask new stuff in the global profile
mask, and trick the -* keyword into installing on a per-package basis.. this is still
faster than the manual way of installing CVS stuff though.. (i'm stil waiting for a
peer-moderated distro without a central management team, with a distributed
'ebuild' database rated by successful compiles and votes..)
aqualung-cvs is in the overlay, and yes, it emerges out of the box with jackd version
0.102.15

Aqualung is written primarily by Tom and Peter Szilagyi, the folks
responsible for the TAP plugin family. I know they care a LOT about

Really? That's bizarre. What error does XMMS give when you try to
start it with JACK running at 44100Hz?

Yes, this is precisely why we're talking about creating a .deb rather than
suggesting to users that it would be just as easy to compile it from source.
Personally, I would prefer to get comfortable with the process of making
packages for newly compiled applications so it can be managed by apt. Once a
debianised source package has been created, it would be possible to use
apt-build in a similar way to the Gentoo system, although in most cases that
would be unnecessary.
Problems with developers trying to maintain packages:
- Too many package formats.
- Too complicated package formats.
But developers should (I think) take on the responsibility to make
things easier for users.
Some upstream authors will be happy to do this, others won't. This is really
distro maintenance work. It may be possible to sponsor important applications
into the main tree via debian-multimedia, where they will trickle down into
DeMuDi, Ubuntu Universe and other derived distros eventually. If there would
be problems with that (e.g. violations of DFSG) it would still be worth
making the .deb available for the upstream author to distribute themselves.
If we want to see things happen I think we have to take the attitude that
it's up to 'us' rather than 'them'. ;)

Gentoo and FC2. The developers are, in my experience, very nice guys
who provide information and fixes quickly to those who take the time
to join their mailing lists and make requests of them. If it's not

My comments were of a general nature and aimed to contrast the problems
"users" have building packages with the problems "developers" have
building packages. What I hope the two contrasting views show is that
the package systems are the real source of the problem, and it is the
"developers" who can fix it. (Not Aqualung developers, but distribution
developers)
I don't think users should ever have to install -dev packages or compile
source code. And if it were easy for developers to build and release
up-to-date packages, then users wouldn't have to do this.

My comments were of a general nature and aimed to contrast the problems
"users" have building packages with the problems "developers" have
building packages. What I hope the two contrasting views show is that
the package systems are the real source of the problem, and it is the
"developers" who can fix it. (Not Aqualung developers, but distribution
developers)
I am just a user.
Problems
with developers trying to maintain packages:
- Too many package formats.
- Too complicated package formats.
But developers should (I think) take on the responsibility to make
things easier for users.
Sorry for having created some kind of problem here. Andrew asked. I
responded. Next time I guess I stay quiet.
I don't think users should ever have to install -dev packages or compile
source code. And if it were easy for developers to build and release
up-to-date packages, then users wouldn't have to do this.
AFAICT that is a distro specific decision. On FC I have to, and I
guess you guys on Debian have to also. On Gentoo I do not, AFAICT.
However, quite often in the last 12 months the Gentoo devs are
refusing to add specific versions of libraries to portage so you find
yourself having to build a library from source and tell portage you've
done it. At least with portage I can do this very easily. In fact, for
Jack, for a long time, I ran Jack outside of portage but told portage
it was on the machine which eliminated dependency issues.
It's essentialy not possible on FC as far as I know. (Or care to know...)
Maybe as users we to understand the decisions involved around these
things before picking a distro. Then there are no suprises.

However I have a feeling it is not set up properly for
low-latency output with no resampling because it sounds exactly the same as ALSA, and the
software volume control in xmms and in the kmix is still working. After doing some
searching on google I have found that versions of JACK 0.80 and
under supported ASIO, but it was removed in later versions. Do you know how I would need
to set it up to get the functionality I am looking for?
And are there any newer music players that support FLAC and JACK output?
you could check out Audacious(1). its the GTK2 successor to XMMS, retaining its plugin
format and native ALSA/JACK output (the other main fork of xmms, BMPx, now uses
GStreamer).
im a bit concerned that you claim the quality is less. i know some windows players (namely
foobar2000) boast of full range 32bit-float interpolated decoding of originally 16bit
sources. generally theres a choice of mp3 decoders: lame,mpg123,mad. youd have to
experiment with compile-time options and different apps to see which one you prefer. the
only other likely source for quality loss is a realtime resampler from eg 44.1 to 48khz.
many mediocre soundcards, particular with jack, tend to default to 48khz, or are even
unable of operating at 44.1 directly..
FLACs sound fine to me in audacious. even with ATIIXP onboard sound piped to a set of
unpowered(!) monitors directly from the headphone jack...

JACK defaults to 48Khz on every soundcard that can do 48Khz.
