The current discussions re: RME cards and ProTools going Linux reminded
me of a question that I wanted to refresh the list with. That is,
building a DAW from scratch. Ok, I'm not talking about creating your own
mobo, but to purchase a pre-made one, a processor, cards, yada..yada.
I haven't seen this disussed recently, and was curious what others have
done, and what others have used, to build-it-yourself.
Can we start with mobo's? Any recommendations, horror stories, successes
are most welcome.
I recently built an AMD64 PC using a DFI K8M800 board, but it was for
MythTV. I had absolutely no problems with the hardware. The problem was
getting 64bit apps/drivers. I had to build most of it myself. It is
getting _much_ better out there for the 64bit world, though.
As I said, that was for MythTV. For audio, my latest is P4 machine is
running FC2 -- with no problems lately. But, this is an older PC.
Stories? recommendations?

What kind of price point are you talking about? As with any other gear
this will influence the answer more than anything ;-)

If you are interested in my opinion you really cannot do better than

Since Ardour and Pro Tool LE are very similar in scope and function my
experience is that the hardware choices work very well for both. Of
course you do have to ensure that Linux will run on the machine, but I
think there is so much info here that you shouldn't ignore it if you
are interested in other people's results.

threads. End of the thread holds the most recent info.

In my experience, by the time I've built it the hardware is outdated
and better stuff comes along, so what starts as a good solutio pretty
quickly ends up pretty much middle of the road.
To me the best DAWs are the ones that work well for 1-2 years. I never
have known which ones this will be.

Good question. I'm getting ready to turn my old system over to my son
and build a new one. I'll take any advice I can get.

I've got an ASUS P4P800SE mobo with a 3.0GHz Prescott P4. It runs
great under RedHat 9 using the 2.4.26-1.ll.rh90.ccrma from Planet
CCRMA. Unfortunately, there are issues with it under FC2, which
keep the machine from even booting using the FC2 boot disks. It took
me a while to dig into the RH archives to find the alternate boot
disk. No biggie for me, Fernando says FC2 is still too bleeding edge
for production use. (Remember folks, when something's called bleeding
edge, it's usually your blood that ends up on the blade!)
I tried the Planet CCRMA 2.4.26-smp kernel with the hyperthreading
turned on in my BIOS, but was getting too many xruns when I ran Ardour,
so I went back to the single processor kernel and all's well.
