Depends on what you mean by "simple" and your use case.
On the analysis-oriented side Sonic Visualiser and Praat come to my mind.
Pure Data's [fiddle~] is also quite good and customisable.
I'm sure there'll be many other suggestions.

Aubio offers a simple program to do exactly that. See
