How can I get the line in from my soundcard routed into ams? I tried
adding a PCM IN module and a PCM OUT module, then connecting them
together. I've connected the ams out to alsa_pcm playpack 1 and 2,
and alsa_pcm captures 1 and 2 are connected to the ams ins (I did all
that with qjackctl).
I know jack and everything else are working because I can load the
example_basic.ams patch, plug in my USB contoller, connect them in
qjackctl and hear the output.
What I want to do now is send the signal from my bass guitar into ams,
then back out (i.e. use it as an effect processor).
Also, is there a module that will convert an audio signal to CV? I
know MCV converts MIDI to CV.
Finally, is there another modular synth-type app that makes what I'm
trying to do any easier?

Isn't ams a soft-synth that is controllable by MIDI? I don't think it's
capable of doing anything with PCM audio input, you'd need a MIDI keyboard or
something like Rosegarden to control it.
If you want to build an effects rtack for your bass, you should use jackrack --
it's lets you stack up LADSPA plugins like you would an effects rack and
process audio.

That would be a real trick. MIDI is easy because it is a defined protocol with
a finite set of instructions... you are basically doing a digital-to-analog
conversion of MIDI control instructions to a defined set of voltages to control
a synth. There might be something out there, but I daresay it's probably not
software-based. You are probably better off getting a bass or guitar MIDI
interface and using that.

I've been thinking that a pitch-to-midi converter would be a
handy tool for those of us who play instruments other than piano.
I imagine it can't be much harder than breaking the signal down
into its component frequencies, and figuring out what the
greatest common factor is of the frequency peaks. There are
probably other considerations that I'm not thinking about off the
top of my head, but it seems like a doable project, if nothing
like that exists already.

There are guitar pickups that can do that, like the Roland GK-2 and GK-3
series. There are also wind and voice controllers also! Again, these are all
hardware based. You've got your work cut out for you if you want to do this in
software -- but we have software-based guitar tuners, so...

I was looking at those pickups a while ago, and I can't remember
if it was the gk-2 or gk-3, but it didn't seem to have actual
midi output, it had a special format that interfaced with other
Roland hardware, so I passed. I think that the reason for the
special pickup was that it had separate transducers for each
string, but I think that the pitch conversion stuff happened in
the other gear. It was a couple months ago that I was reading
about it, so I may be a bit fuzzy.

Yeah, they require the synth module, unfortunately, you can't just plug the
Roland pickup into a MIDI IN on a sound card. THAT would be uber cool...
It looks like Intelliscore also does real-time conversion, so you can control a
MIDI with an analog instrument. Unfortunately, it only runs on Windows.

It is way more difficult than that. Finding the pitch of a signal, even
monophonic, is *very* tricky, for real instruments.

New subject: [linux-audio-user] Does someone sucessfuly enable sis7012's midi port?
I did it as you mentioned, but When playmidi, it still have no sound
output.
Then I installed OSS/Linux 3.99.1i driver, when dmesg it says:
"oss: Probing the hardware for MPU-401 (UART) failed."
Which item in the bios setup configuration present the irq?

SiS chipsets don't have MIDI support, but the LPC I/O controller has a
MPU-401 compatible MIDI port.
Use the snd-mpu401 driver, and specify the port address and interrupt
that you've configured in the BIOS setup.
The entries in your modules.conf/modprobe.conf shoud look like this:
alias snd-card-0 i810_audio
alias snd-card-1 mpu401
options i810_audio index=0
options mpu401 index=1 port=0x330 irq=5

Are your alsa capture ports working? Narrow the problem down, it
probably has nothing to do with AMS at all.
Connect your capture ports to meterbridge and see what's going on. If
you don't have meterbridge, get it. :)
Chances are you've got some mixer settings (ie in alsamixer) that aren't
set right if you're not getting any audio into Jack.

I'm thinking mixer settings for sure then. I've never had the AMS
pcm-in module not work, and I used to use it for effects processing all
the time.

There is a LADSPA control->audio interpolator, but I havn't seen a
plugin that does the other way around (it is a pretty nasty thing to do,

I confess that I don't understand most of this thread, I particularly don't
understand why alsa_pcm captures 1 and 2 are connected to the ams ins, don't
you want the line-in captures?

Doesn't AMS have an envelope follower?
Depending on what you want to achieve that one would be a simple
solution for some simple control (I'm using it quite often for
processing with the Nord Micro Modular).
If you want it more complicated you can make a set of parallel
filters, which all filter the bass signal, put envelope followers
behind them, and you would have a simple "pitch" tracking system.
I think it is wise to try and use the modules at hand to achieve what
you want, before trying to write new ones.
Pitch in itself is a bit more complicated than frequency alone. Pitch
is the perception of the frequency content that a musical instrument
produces. It has a relation to the frequencies that we can measure,
but there are some fuzzy things in this relation, which make things
harder to program.
But then again, maybe you do not need pitch for your control, and just
some kind of rough indication of the frequency content to use as
control signals.
