Hi,
I run across this problem a lot in Linux. Maybe someone can help me
make my Gentoo system do audio better. All the straight Alsa stuff works
well. However, when I'm browsing around I come to web sites that
probably want to play some audio, but this is Linux and Alsa, so things
don't work easily. At the web site
http://www.skale.org
I start getting this repeating glitch noise every 8 seconds or so. It
hasn't happened every time I've visited the site today, but it's
happened a lot of times.
In hdspmixer I see this glitch on all 26 playback channels, by the
way, so I'm assuming that this means it's some sort of OSS problem, but
I'm not sure.
What's wrong with my setup of Alsa, which in most other ways works
just fine, and why can I also not get mp3 (well, really xmms) to work
under Linux?
BTW - much non-Alsa audio from Games works fine, but also drives all
26 playback channels. Should it really work this way?

I am using artsd as sound server.
It requires that programs that will try to write directly to /dev/dsp,
be run with artsdsp.
To solve that problem I modified the mozilla shell script to add artsdsp.
Now it read like this: ( at the end of /usr/bin/mozilla)
exec artsdsp $MOZILLA $*
Then, restart mozilla.

As far as I can see ALSA are just the sound driver. It does not have a
sound server.
IN my Red Hat 9 box, the sound server artds has an option -a that is
supposed to accept alsa, oss and toss as parameters. But, artds -A
shows that valid options are only oss, toss and null.
So, I set it to run with -a toss ( prerefences -> Sound -> Sound server).
As long as I can hear music I am sure the Alsa drivers are working.
I would like to know if working with artsd is ok or I should wswitch to
jack or esd.

It's probably the flash/java plugins audio code being stinky.

What is the error? Can you start it up? Are you using the alsa driver or
the oss driver?

No, but the hdsp only has one subdevice IIUC and the oss emulation
probably onpens the subdevice for writing. You should let the alsa
developer sknow that this is happening so they can make a work around
for devices like yours or fix the driver.
Most people don' use an hdsp for playing games on anyhow. It's common to
have a consumer card for that as hw:0 and the pro cards as hw:1 hw:2 ...

On the top right look for the sound demo of Absynth 2. There's both a
'play' button and a 'play all' button. Hit either one and listen to the
audio.
On my system before the audio plays I get a horrible, loud static noise,
and then the demo plays. On the 'play all' option I get this noise in
between each sample sound.
I'd like to get some feedback on what works for others on this site.
This may be a problem with only my driver, or maybe you'll hear it also
in which case it could be a more generic Alsa problem.

It works fine with my maestro3 + rh9 planet system, but the player is
written in shockwave flash, so maybe its a flash bug.

It works fine with my maestro3 + rh9 planet system, but the player is
written in shockwave flash, so maybe its a flash bug.

Thanks for the feedback. Possibly this is an HDSP type bug, either in the
complete family, or in just the HDSP 9652. In the cold light of the morning
I wonder now why I didn't reboot my newly constituted Reaktor Session
machine back into Planet CCRMA Redhat and try it there, so I'll do that this
evening. That machine uses a Hammerfall Light.
I hope one or two HDSP type users (Patrick? Jesse?) Might run by this web
site and listen to Absynth 2. It's not a bad way to spend a couple of
minutes anyway.
It would actually be a positive outcome (I think) to find it is only the
HDSP 9652 since then I could focus on just working to get that fixed.

Hi all,
Small update. In my case the 'weird glitchy noise' appears to be the
HDSP 9652 changing sample frequencies. My system is set up with the 9652
as the Master clock device and a frequency of 44.1K. It's ADAT1 output
and input go to an external A/D/D/A that runs at 48K unless it receives
a different sync frequency. Normally everything syncs up and runs at
44.1K in this configuration.
The first thing I found that seems like a bug is that when I change
the sample frequency of the card using hdspconf from 44K to 48K I get
the same ugly noise. It seems to me that something should be done in the
driver so that when clock frequency is change the driver would ensure
that these noises do not happen.
The second thing I noted was that when I browse these web pages that
cause the noise problems, the ADAT1 input sync/lock indicator in
hdspconf changes from sync to lock and back to sync. I'm guessing that
something is changing the card's frequency from 44K to 48K. (Flash
possibly? Or something weird in the driver?)
The third thing I noted, which seems pretty weird, is that if I set
the card up to be master but run at 48K, then when I browse these web
pages the noise happens and something changes the card's base rate back
to 44.1K permanently. That seems quite wrong. I really don't want
anything messing with my frequency settings on a permanent basis, but
something is.
I'm hoping that someone else running a card in the HDSP line can pull
up hdspconf and see if any of this happens with your system. Possibly
you won't see it unless you have a similar, external bi-direction

uh - I'm pretty sure I wasn't getting that glitching noise when I was
changing frequencies - although the first time I ran hdspconf, I changed the
spdif button to professional, or something - I changed all around in that
part of the window, and at some point, the last 8 channels on my board
showed up with pegged meters - no audible noise, just pegged meters. I had
to reboot everything to get them to go away and be able to hear sound again
the glitchy noise you describe actually sounds like it's to be expected when
changing freqs - it's not something I would worry about in my studio - after
all, it's not something people do, say, in the middle of a song *laugh* -
although the part about websites changing it, that's a little screwy
