It still is, if you can get such a beast in working condition.
That was in the late 80s, IIRC.
Roland started
it's G-500 system in 1977.
There is nothing new under the sun. :)
You can always mount a (recent) Roland GK-3 on your guitar.

Nothing new except that in output you manipulate a "true" digitalized
signal instead of MIDI messages. I would like to know how the signal
of each string is extracted from the mixture signal...
The weird thing about this guitar is that you do not connect directly
the guitar to the computer, but to a breakout box which convert back
the digital signal to analog. Thus you need an additional audio
interface :

So, the only interest is that you get separate channels for each
string... in analog...

i met the guy who runs the (tiny) company who does the engineering side
of this for gibson. they have plans to change that. i'm probably not
even meant to say that!

And it opens tricks like "pay some $ more and be able to use all your
strings!". Of course some guitarists (especially bass players) can save
some bucks :D
