Hi,
My Roland JX-8P is dead, and it's getting harder and harder and more
expensive to get new ones that's reliable and repairable. I got my first
one back in 1987 and the last one 3 years ago. I'm looking for the pad
and strings/brass sounds that synths like Juno 60/106 and JX-8P could
produce. You wonder what on earth I'm talking about? Watch, or listen to
this, it totally rocks:

The problem is that there's nothing quite like them AFAIK and I'm lost
when it come to tweak synths like for example zynaddsubfx/yoshimi wich
seem to be able to deliver. Another one, Loomer Aspect, is one that i
might tweak, but it does not work in my Ubuntu 10.04 studio.
So my question is: Does it exist a real Linux analog-sounding,
subtractive, chrash free and maintained SW synth that can match or
substitute the HW above? I've sniffed at great synths like amSynth, AMS,
but they don't sound that 8P-ish in my ears - on the other hand, it might
be me that's not good at tweaking them. Is it anybody here who knows both
the great analogue sounding Rolands and sw synths that can put me in the
right direction?

Have you tried Bristol? It's got some really nice sounds, but just as
with a HW analog synth, you need to set up your sounds yourself. You
are presented with a graphic of the actual synth model you pick, and you
twist knobs from there. I use the Prophet 5, ARP 2600, and Hammond B3
instruments in it a lot.

It also sounds like ass. Not to be an ass or anything.

Yes I've tried that one approx one year ago and I love the knob analogy,
but it won't produce _that_ sounds yet if I'm right - only something that
reminds about it.
I realize that nothing is like the real thing, but hope that i can find
something that's close enough, or even better. Thanks for reminding me
about Bristol again, I've had a lot of fun with it.

Hi Jostein!
I don't have much personal experience with SW synths, since a lot of the
easy knob-twiddling kind are graphical only. That said though, I've heard a
few just asthey are. AMS struck me at being very good, though being very good
at Moog not Roland. :-) I've also heard some old Rolands, though I was never
really fond of them. Still Yoshimi is very good for pads, the best I've heard
on Linux.
Otherwise you might try something like PD and build yourself an instrument,
that reflects the features of a JP-8x. I don't know,if you can then also save
patches for that specific synth, since for PureData - or other SW synths of
that type - your whole synth-model will be a patch for a start.
Something, which hasn't been mentioned yet: How about VST-plugins? I'm sure,
there should be something - of not more than one something - to home in on
your specs? www.kvraudio.com is usually the place to look for those.
As for the knob twiddling: Did you ever consider one of those MIDI
slider/knob boxes (Beringer BCR2000 or BCF2000, Korg Kaoscontrol or what3ever
it was called). They are quite good, if you like to have real controls under
yours hands, while building sounds.

Bad style I know, replying to oneself, but I forgot: Playing devil's advocate:
But why not consider a newer HW synth? Perhaps a nice virtual analog/analog
modelling one. There are still a few nice ones around and of course there are
again real analog ones. the DSI synths have CEM chips for their filters. I
don't know, what a JP-9x might cost, but I suspect, that in comparison it
wouldn't be too bad, especially considering, that they are new and have a lot
of controls, only ever really seen the Mopho, but it was nice for tweaking.

I did a lot of work with TAL NoiseMaker on my recent RPM album, and it
was really great to work with. It's very much your traditional
subtractive synth, but it has a good feature set, and a straightforward
UI, and it sounds great.
If you're familiar with programming the JX-8P, then you should feel
right at home; I don't know how close it would sound to the JX-8P in
particular, but it's definitely capable of a lot of those classic synth
sounds. It also has an effects section that includes two different
chorus algorithms, which are at least vaguely Juno-like -- both sound great.
I've been using the native VST version, from the Distrho project, but
there's an LV2 port in progress as well.

I dont know if it runs on Linux, but the Arturia Jupiter-8V is as far as
i know the best emulation of the jupiter 8. But it costs money..

I have nothing against paying for what I use and I think that the price
is probably right. The character sounds a little bit different (not
badder, just different) from the Junos and the XP to me and I might be
able to live with that, however it's Win and Mac only. I only pay, use
and support stuff that run glitch free and native in my 64-bit system.

Nothing beats the original, especialy if its true analogue, i really
hope you find a way to get this beauty repaired.

It's in the synth graveyard now, playing the most heavently harp sounds in the
world - I threw it away.
