Greetings. I have a need to turn on/off multiple software audio filters
(reverb, flange, chorus, et al.) using either computer keystrokes or
MIDI control signals. Anyone have a way? I've looked at GUI automation
of calfjackhost instances and several other things, but have not found
anything likely to work very well.

Hello Jonathan!
I might suggest Nama. As long as the effects have a depth setting, which can
be set to 0 you can either control them via MIDI or via short commands:
mfx D 4 0
We haven't got a single effect bypass yet and I think it would involve
stopping the engine for a short moment.
As for the commands, once you've got a session all ready to run, you can
easily create scripts or custom commands, which can shorten the commands to
one or two letter combinations. It would be absolutely trivial and straight
forward.

Not stopping, but a brief fade-out-in to cover the pop
caused by latency change in adding/removing an effect.
(Unless I'm behind the times, only Ardour's mixer
can make these transitions seamlessly.)

Renoise can can't it? Just keeps the delay (PDC) the same whether the device is
enabled or not, so that when you turn it on and off no adjustment is needed. Means the
delay on the DSP chain is greater, IE the sum of all effects whether enabled or not, but
you wont get glitches from turning things on and off.

I was concidering just fading out the effected signal, and fading in
the "latency-less" one, sure there's a bit of "latency distortion"
or phase
incoherence... but I challenge anybody to notice that and not think its
just part of turning the effect off :D

Yeah with correct values should be invisible to most people under most
circumstances. Same as some programs/effects wont allow instant value
changes even if that is what you have programmed but put a few
(dozen/hundred?) samples ramp to try and prevent glitching sounds.
Values need to be carefully chosen though.

Hi, you could for example use Jack-Rack. You can easily assign midi
controls to the bypass of each effect. If you need lv2 effects you
could try lv2rack (I don't use it alot though and can't tell if you
can assign midi, but I would suspect so)
If you need to this with a mix of standalone software (rakarrack and
guitarix come to mind) you would need something midi-controllable to put
up the signal chain to split your signal. There are probably easier [and
better] ways to do this, but with a bit of tinkering I came around with
this:
in jack-rack you load "mono to stereo splitter" and "simple
amplifier",
you set the gain of the amplifier to its minimum (-70 I think). Now,
when both are enabled, the signal only comes out of the splitter
outputs (mono_to_1-1 and mono_to_1-2) and when both are disabled the
signal comes out of jack-rack's outputs.
You then only need to assign the same MIDI CC to both "enable" buttons
and you're done.
Quite a hack, but it should work
