Ok I need to give more specifics with my question...
I am using Knoppix 3.3, with an ALS-100 soundcard.
Knoppix autoconfigures the soundcard so I have no idea
if the soundcard is using ALSA or OSS drivers.
I tried running the Rosegarden sequencer, but its
midiport was set up as /dev/null so it apparently
didn't locate the midiport. I am pretty sure the
midiport has been autoconfigured, so how do I find
what device (/dev/????) to set the midi port to?

Well, I think the first step is to figure out if you're using Alsa. If
you're not then I don't know how Rosegarden would act. I've only used it
under Alsa.
As root do an lsmod and let's see what's loaded.
Post back your /etc/modules/conf file also.

Do a lsmod to get a listing of the loaded modules. If you find your card
with the prefix "snd-" then you're using ALSA. You'll probably find lot
of things so probably a lsmod | grep als-100 will be a better choice, or
at least it will be more understandable.

That's an odd error -- it sounds like you might be running
Rosegarden-2.1, which is now rather antique app that uses OSS for
sound. These days you might get more joy from an ALSA-based
sequencer, not least because most of them (Rosegarden-4, MusE etc)
are far more sophisticated than Rosegarden-2.1.
I can't comment on running either of those under Knoppix, except to
say that I'm quite certain Knoppix 3.3 uses ALSA.
