I don't know about that. I know that Gnome3 uses 1GB of memory ... My
wife's new netbook has Ubuntu 11.04 on it, haven't noticed if it's using
PA or not, but sound works.

New subject: Gnome-shell | Unity
With KDE4 you can disable background services, Desktop Effects and
all goodies in ``System Settings''. Then It uses 500MB here in
average, and not much CPU with Desktop Effects disabled. With some of
the goodies it uses 600MB here, not that much. Also Phonon does not
require PulseAudio at all, and can talk to ALSA very smoothly.
I wonder if it would be possible to have a JACK backend for
KDE/Phonon... That would make a nice environment for pro audio work
with a ready-made fancy desktop.
I like OpenBox a lot too. I used it a lot. Xmonad is also great, if
you enjoy tiling WM.
The downside for OpenBox (not xmonad) is that it seems not very
actively developed in the last year or so, not much releases or even
git commits.

You *might* find something like that in KXStudio

KXStudio uses PulseAudio by default, and it's not a lightweight at
all, it has all kinds of crazy stuff in it :-) BTW some people in Arch
and Chakra tries to make possible to use a lighter configuration of
KDE (KDEmod).

Fluxbox is not Openbox's successor. Actually Openbox is newer (started
after Fluxbox) but it was independent of Fluxbox as well, and their
goals were different. Both were derived from Blackbox long time ago,
hence the *box name, but that is of little relevance nowadays because
Openbox 3 was rewritten as a new project and does not share the common
roots anymore.

Jack works really well with the xine phonon backend at least. Nepomuk (file
indexing) is probably the main offender for cpu/memory consumption, You can
turn this off or limit it. Personally I let it run everywhere but where I
keep my git/subversion repos.
PulseAudio is optional but I am finding that this is actually working quite
well for me.
(I have to run pulseaudio --kill after starting jack)

Phonon > Jack works fine. I'm not using the whole KDE4 desktop, though, but lots
of KDE apps with Fluxbox wm. Awesome (http://awesome.naquadah.org/) is also an
excellent and lightweight window manager.
