Is it really too much to ask for a distro which is supposedly dedicated
to audio and video production work to keep up with the latest versions
of those types of programs and libraries?
Ubuntu Studio 64 v8.04 (Hardy) is still stuck at Ardour 2.3. I can't
even get the Rubber Band library to compile because I can't get vamp-sdk
to compile either, so now I can't compile Rui's Qtractor with the
options I want. You'd think they'd all be in the Ubuntu Studio
repositories, but they're nowhere to be found.
Is there a distro for audio out there with a nice real-time kernel that
can keep up with the updates so I don't have to keep doing it all manually?

I once tried building an audio system using Sidux (which is based on
"stabilizing" debian unstable with some testing thrown in) and a
custom kernel and it worked quite well. I flipflop around between
distros quite often... always want to try the latest and greatest...
but might be giving that particular combination another shot soon
myself as well.

As far as I know, there is...
my /etc/apt/sources.list.d/64studio.list looks like this:

I haven't uncommented the 'testing' repositories yet, but will do if I
find I need the latest versions of things.

I love how polished Ubuntu is, but keeping some software packages up to
date is a chore. I don't think I'm getting around it, though. I just
wish I could figure out why I can't compile vamp-sdk, or why it is I

I think what I'm going to do is make a list of software to remove from
my system, and then simply keep up on that software manually, and hope I
can keep it all working.

I am realy happy with sidux. It's allway's up to date (rolling release) and I
never have a prob with compile the app I wont. Also the rt-kernel is allways
up to date.

Hi,
I would recommand to you Fedora and CCRMA package wich is always up-to-date
and the community is quite active. So every time you've got a wish or an
issue you can ask on the ccrma mailing list.
Gentoo and the Pro-audio overlay is up-to-date too, but perhaps a bit more
difficult to install and configure.

I know the problem as I use Ubuntu Studio myself.
It's about half a year behind, sometimes even more.
This is because it is tied to the ubuntu release cycle, and
everything needs to go into the normal ubuntu repositories, which means
that every package must go through Debian or Ubuntu, which isn't as
fast as putting it up on some unofficial repository.
My solution so far is to compile apps that I really need. Better
don't try to stay really up-to-date by compiling every svn-version all
the time, or you won't do anything else.
The Ubuntu Studio way to do everything through official repos probably
has some benefits, but the drawbacks are obvious: it takes some time to
get new versions in and it's hard, if not impossible to get some apps in
Maybe I give something like sidux a whirl as well. studio64 doesn't
appeal to me, since using debian-stable, the system in general is not
very up-to-date. With the planet ccrma, the question is which Fedora
version to use. I tried it once with the most recent one then and had
lots of problems.

Normally it isn't recommend to have a mixed Debian based
system. When
you use stable (as 64studio) does, you can use backports. But mixing
stable with testing is asking for troubles.
Mixing Debian testing with unstable isn't recommend either by the Debian
devs, but works way better then mixing stable with testing. It gives you
the advantage that you are able keep almost every package up to date
(you have to do it sometimes by hand, cause also in unstable the audio
packages are not always up to date).

Sidux is another solution for it, already mentioned.
If there was a version of 64studio based on Debian testing, it would be
much more easy to keep audio packages up to date in my view (you're able
to mix it with some unstable packages). And you know the newest packages
fixes in general some bugs and add new features which are most of the
time very useful...
Maybe an idea for the 64studio devs?
