hi all,
i've been looking for an equivalent to metasynth which runs on linux.
does anyone know of anything in this area? in lieu of my finding
anything, i have knocked together some quick scripts which replicate
part of what it does, but don't want to reinvent the wheel if it
already exists.
for those of you who don't know metasynth, it is a very influential
and unusual/creative piece of software which allows one to 'draw',
aphex twin is often cited as the most well-known user, and it was used
in the film 'the matrix', and there are others, possibly autechre if i
recall correctly.

Not exactly like Metasynth of course, but ARSS [1] does (non-realtime)
image-to-sound analysis and re-synthesis, if you are combfortable with
compiling it yourself and using the command line.

Hi Robin!
Not sure, if this will meet your requirements, but csound certainly has
image processing opcodes and it has a GUI. I'm sure, that CLM and PD should
have the same. For drawing the shapes, I think you might use some other
external app, if the GUIs of the synths don't provide.

i'm not sure why i didn't think of pd, i use it all the time, and it
does audio and images. anyway, i did some searching and found this:

it takes a video input and converts it to audio. i'll go from there
and see what else i can do. cheers for the suggestion. i'm also

I do this using FingerplayMIDI on my Android-Phone connected to Alsa
Modular Synth in Linux. It takes some basic knowledge and time to
configure the matrix of FPMIDI to provoke something usefull in AMS but
once it works it is absolutely hypnotic fun that poses a serious thread
on bedtime ;-)
DIN is noise offers a drawpad-interface builtin.

They just take one big FFT of the whole sound, but if you're just looking
for experimental manipulation of spectrum, they might work.

This thread is a little old, but I just came across SoundFumble. It's a
plugin for Gimp that allows you to generate sound via ALSA in realtime.
Looks kind of cool.
