hello list,
i might (with emphasis on the conditional) get some external funding for
buying an 8-channel audio system for our school of music. i need some
recommendations on:
1) the best audio card (with linux support, of course) we could get in the
us$ 800-1200 price range.
2) good active speakers in the us$1000-1500 price range each. (do some
speakers work better than others when put together in an octophonic set? i
have no idea)
i'd really appreciate if someone could share experiences and
recommendations on this subject.

Hello,
If you need line inputs/outputs: the RME multiface. You get 8 analog
inputs, 8 analog outputs, ADAT I/O, SPDIF, MIDI, wordclock and even ADAT
sync. The Linux drivers are written with support from RME so they are of
very high quality.
If you need mic inputs:, a cheaper soundcard with ADAT I/O (RME
hdsp9652?) and getting a 8 channel mic preamp with adat outputs.
Presonus Digimax LT, Focusrite OctoPre. For analog outputs you can get
an expansion board for the hdsp card. If you don't get as much money as
you hope, the Behringer ADA8000 gives you 8 mic preamps (adat in) and 8
analog outputs (adat out).
If you need both line inputs and mic preamps, you can combine these two
options: get the multiface and an adat micpre.
I can't comment on the speakers though.

no, in principle we don't need mic inputs, the system is essentially for
reproduction, not recording. but if i understand the specs correctly, the
HDSP 9652 together with the AEB8-O expansion board would give us what we
want: 8 good quality analog outputs, right?

the DA (and the AD) is in the break out box.

Of course, the 9652 and the AEB8-O is probably cheaper than the
multiface + pci/cardbus card.
Disclaimer: I own and use a multiface + PCI card with Linux, but I
haven't even seen a 9652.

M-Audio Delta 1010. Great Linux support. 24/96KHz, 8 balanced
analog I/Os, 2 digital (S/PDIF), hardware monitoring. $600US from most
dealers - Musician's Friend, American Musical Supply, Sweetwater, etc.
I use an ST Audio DSP2000 C-Port which uses the same chipset, has the
same I/O capabilities but uses unbalanced lines. It works great (it was
also about $150US cheaper). The Hammerfall stuff is probably better but
by the time you get all the outboard gear you'll need to record with
them you'll probably have spent more than your budget.

With that budget I would go the Genelec route. I heard several good
multichannel setups with Genelecs in UK in universitys (namedly in
Sheffield and in Leeds).
They have a rather linear response, I use them in my own studio (the
1030). But be prepared, speakers are religion and often a starting point
of senseless flamewars.

no, please, no flamewars, just friendly advise, OK?
one of our choices were the genelecs, actually. don't know much about
models, but our bet were the 8050A. another option were the tannoy system 15
DMT II.
