Hi folks,
I've been trying for months now to get arecord to work with the built-in
microphone and/or mic jack of my laptop but it just won't work. Since
the alsa developers seem totally uninterested in fixing or even
understanding this problem (yes, I've posted on alsa-devel many many
times) and the built-in A/D on the laptop is unlikely to be any good
anyhow I've decided to investigate an external A/D system. It's for a
laptop so it would have to be either PC card, USB, or firewire, not
PCI. Compatability and reliability are a big deal to me -- I'm fed up
with sending mail to alsa-devel, which seems to route to /dev/null as
far as I can tell. Can anybody recommend a solution that's really
simple to set up and reliable to use under linux and doesn't cost an
arm and a leg (e.g. less than $400)? I'm not too picky about number of
ins and outs or fancy features, more picky about quality,
compatability, ease-of-use, and reliability.

I belive it's been said several times on this list that Edirol USB interfaces
work almost flawlessly, with no specific setup required. They can easily be
found at music stores, or the better computer shops.
Avoid M-Audio like the plague. I want to kill my quattro.

The UA-20 doesn't enable its MIDI ports unless you switch it to
"Advanced Driver" mode.

Really? I'm quite satisfied with my Quattro, whereas the Edirol UA-20
gave me lots of headaches. Admitted, I was one of the first users of
it, when the ALSA support for it wasn't ready yet.
I am running an older ALSA currently on my laptop, though. Maybe
things broke in the meantime?

Not to be misunderstood: I don't own the UA-20 anymore. I did buy it
when I needed to have it running in about a week. I had hoped, that it
would be just plug and play but for the UA-20 a special quirk is
needed, because it isn't fully compliant to the USB audio spec which
Roland co-wrote. The quirk couldn't be written in less than the week
after which I needed to use this or another USB interface for the LAD
conference, which is absoluetly okay, but didn't help me then ;)
I think, that now the UA-20 works just fine. The Quattro doesn't need
any special quirks so I replaced the UA-20 with a Quattro at my dealer
for the LAD conference. And now I can enjoy 4 channels, great for DJ
work.

You might try a Digigram VxPocket (around $200), or if you have a slightly
larger budget (around $450), a PDAudio-CF card and an external
mic-pre/A-to-D like an M-Audio Duo.
