Overwhelming number of xruns in Ubuntustudio

Hi there, I'm getting a strange and very high number of xruns in ubuntustudio. I don't know what is causing it. The xruns start as soon as I launch jack, and I don't even need to start anything else. I had Ubuntu Feisty installed and thought the problem was the kernel, so I installed Ubuntustudio, but it didn't help.

i have been having the same issue. i think it is kernel related. i'm just doing an update in gutsy now to see if this kernel fixes it, but if not i'll go back to my previous solution. i basically downloaded the kernel from 64studio and installed that manually using dpkg. *all* my xrun problems went away. definately worth trying. i'm not sure what the difference is in the kernels, but the ubuntu one (even the -rt one) definately has some problem (for me anyways). Perhaps a diff -u /boot/64s_kernel.config /boot/us_kernel.config might provide a hint of what's different. Do you have Intel HDA soundcard? If so, please try adding the following to your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base: options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 (also try 2 and 3--on my Santa Rosa MBP 3 works the best) Hope this helps! Best wishes, Ico

Are you using the same parameters for jackd that you were using previously? If that does not help, please tell us what sound card and what jackd parameters you are using. Sampo

Hi, Yes, the parameters are the same, I think they are the default ones: Frames / Period 1024 Sample Rate 44100 Hz Perios Buffer 2 My soundcard is a Conexant AC-Link Audio, I'm on a Hp dv5000 laptop. I changed driver from ALSA to OSS in JACK and the xruns stopped, is this helpful to identify the problem? thanks Sampo Savolainen wrote:

You might also benefit from a slightly smaller frames / period, like 512. The driver flags mentioned by Ivica Ico Bukvic (position_fix=1) is also a good idea. My intel-hda "soundcard" only produces distortion without it.

The alsa driver should be better in the performance sense. You should try different options for jack until you get it right. Sampo (*) The intel-hda type interfaces have caused a lot of headache for people using linux.

Aside, I've been battling with a TOshiba Satellite P200 with Intel HDA soundcard. after working through many howto's and still getting incredible numbers of xruns, I changed to 3 periods per buffer and now I have none.
