Hi all,
since the combination of Tracktion 6 and Carla as a VST plug-in works
reasonably stable, I started to record and mix more and more on Linux
(Arch) but I'm still not very familiar with the choice of good plug-ins
available and how to get the best of them.
So, let's start with reverbs: which reverb plugins do you use? Which are
your favourites? In which situation? Do you have any good settings or
presets to share? I can use almost any format, i.e. LADSPA, LV2, Linux
VST, Windows VST 64bit, although I prefer LV2 and Linux VSTs and at
least a basic GUI, since I like it when parameters are labelled properly
and have "real" values, not only 0.0 .. 1.0 ;)
Tracktion has a very flexible routing system, were you can make every
track an aux bus by inserting an aux send plug-in after the source track
and an aux return plug-in before the effect plugin on the aux track.
This makes it very easy to pre- or post-process the reverb signal with
other plug-ins (e.g. EQ or compressor), so to my purpose it doesn't
matter if a reverb pug-in doesn't offer many parameters (e.g. built-in
EQ etc.) as long as it sounds good.

I use the g2verb LADSPA plugin by Fons Adriaensen a lot. It's a basic goto for all
unexposed situations. When I need something more subtle I turn to Tim Goetze's CAPS
plate 2x2 LADSPA plugin. It can sound much smaller and unobtrusive. For orchestral
instruments, piano and good vocals, I first try a convolution reverb, which you can use
with a few LV2 plugins or with jconvolver. Jconvolver, being a standalone app, can be
connected in any way, that you like, to your DAW. I believe there also exists a standalone
program by Fons Adriaensen, that specially tailored to IR reverbs, so you can adapt even
those to some extent.
There are one or two Calf reverbs, that I tried and found helpful in certain situations,
but despite their interesting parameter range, I never lifted them into my shortlist.

Thanks for your suggestions so far. Keep them coming! :)
1) Didn't know about the OverTone plug-in yet. The demo sounds nice and
the interface is clear and simple. Would be nice to have more than one
type of reverb, though.
2) The DiscoDSP reverb ins't listed on their new home page.
3) I have used MVerb and the zynaddsubfx reverb, which is available
through the Carla-project as a separate plugin, and they sound ok, but
they only come with a few presets and I didn't have the time to try
tweaking the available params much yet. I do wish that Open Source audio
projects would invest more time in shipping with more presets (there are
projects that do, I know).
4) I tried the CAPS PlateX2 reverb and I quite like it. Simple but good
sounding for vintage stuff. I would still prefer if params had
"speaking" labels and values used proper units and value ranges.
5) After I began writing this mail I spent the afternoon cataloging the
reverb plugins I have installed on my system. Here's the result:

On the convolution front there is also Klangfalter, which seems to work
better with some hosts than IR.

Right, I had that installed, but in my first sweep I missed it because
the plug-in name doesn't contain "verb" ;) Added it to the list and also
"Roomy" (OpenAV).
The Linux VST hangs Tracktion (apparently Tracktion has problems with
plug-ins using different JUCE versions :(), but the LV2 version works in
Carla, even though, when I try to open the plug-in GUI in Carla a second
time, the window is blank. I'll file an issue with Carla for that. Apart
from that it looks like this could become my convolution reverb of choice.
Do you guys have any specific impulse responses you like? I have
hundreds of them from different sources on the net (echochamber.ch, Big
Gee's Lexicon 480L Reverb, LexiconPCM90, etc.) and I'm a bit spoilt for
choice ;)

On Linux I can use only Zyn Reverb. There is a LADSPA version and it comes
in rakarrak. The rest are too "small" for ambient.

Sorry about that. The tradeoff is made in favour of simplicity
(the idea originally claiming the 'S' in LADSPA).

This isn't an exhaustive list at all, but perhaps a good starting point..
I'm old school and like plates, so for plates the free LADSPA CAPS Plate
is very good and authentic sounding, a reasonable priced payware option is
the OverToneDSP RVB-500 which comes in a LinuxVST plugin format and it is
killer..

around, The MVerb (part of the DISTRHO stuff) is quite good and my
personal fave (again a reasonably priced payware) is the linuxDSP SR2b
which sadly seems to not be available in the re-formed OverToneDSP product
list yet so unless you already own it there prolly isn't a license key
available..
Some people like the Calf plugins Reverb and some don't, it comes as part
of the suite so it's probably worth a listen too..

Well, while I am not a musician, this topic interests me, as I enjoyed a reverb
affect on many top40 stations in the 50s/60s. Is their a simple way of adding
reverb in a non-graphical console, to a live microphone? It would be really nice
if there were a way of running in mplayer or mpv. Thanks in advance

For acoustic and classical instruments I use zita reverb (standalone) and just leave it
at the default parameters. Never desired anything else.

I know that this was about reverbs, but just to note that Ardour
allows the same sort of routing. That said ...
