Hi everyone,
After more than a year of development, I am pleased to announce the release of
Jackbeat 0.7.

Jackbeat is an audio sequencer running on Linux and Mac OS X, for musicians
and sound artists:
* Drummachine interface with animations for easy and playful editing
* Built for both composition and live setups with high interactivity needs
* Extremely easy to use but yet powerful by connecting with other
applications and plugins using JACK and OSC
* Loads and saves .jab files, Jackbeat's xml+tar open file format
* Supports native audio devices, PulseAudio and JACK
NEWS:
* The GUI has been re-designed for a better look and improved user experience
* New shortcuts, audio widgets and waveform animation bring more interactivity
* OSC is now supported with a fair amount of methods and events
* Mac OS X integration has been much improved
* ALSA, CoreAudio and PulseAudio are now directly supported in addition to JACK
* Several bugs and usability issues have been fixed
* The internal architecture has been improved

it later (hopefully today) when I get the time.

Regarding feedback, if I feel I can use it as it is, I'd be glad to dig
in and give you feedback on my findings. And I can very well see myself
using OSC...

feedback on the OSC support first.

Thanks. Vuggeviser (lullabies) are not that much mine (I wrote two, play
piano on the CD and live. Modlys does have a few faster tracks but
that's basically supposed to be meditation music, so I have to be
careful with the energy level.

I played a bit with it yesterday, and was a bit disappointed to find it
seems "just" to be a drum machine (your original release announcement
mentioned "audio sequencer"). I'm not sure I can find use for
"just" a
drum machine, but I'm gonna play with it some more.

goal. At the time I started Jackbeat I was into making a tool that would fit my
song composition needs, and I wanted something compact. Each square on the
pattern was likely to represent 8 measures of a recorded guitar part for

Better said, I'm interested in how it could evolve being influenced by various
users and artists as you. That said, my current future plans would tend to get
inspired by *some* of the features of the famous Live.
Nevertheless, coming back to reality, I think that you may find comfortable
using Jackbeat as a music sketching utility, provided you work with audio stuff
not only midi. And, if you spend a little time doing some OSC routing you might
"sequence the sequences" themselves from an external application by sending
/<sequence>/start OSC messages to Jackbeat..

This is not only about sound. One of my ancient idea is a graphical output
window, which would have a black background and show the current pattern as

I am getting an error when I configure jackbeat-0.7.1; it can not find
portaudio. But I have
libportaudio2_19+svn20071207-0.64studio1~etch1_i386.deb installed.
checking for PORTAUDIO... no
configure: error: you need portaudio-2.0 >= 19 - Please see http://www.portaudio.com
How do I point to portaudio when I configure?

It should work right out of the box. Your portaudio .pc (pkg-config) file may be
in an unusual place. On Debian it is in: /usr/lib/pkgconfig/portaudio-2.0.pc
If that's the case then you need to set PKG_CONFIG_PATH before running ./configure.
Alternatively, I suppose there could be a version string comparison problem if
your .pc file contains a weird one.
What do the following commands produce?
pkg-config --modversion portaudio-2.0
ls /usr/lib/pkgconfig/portaudio*
cat /usr/lib/pkgconfig/portaudio-2.0.pc
