Hi,
There is no good free tracker for linux is it?
Are people using renoise here? What does it adds comparing to the apps
who are freely available on linux?
Can I just use instruments delivered by renoise (how good are they?) and
VST or can I also use jack apps like linuxsampler?

Dirk, your question has been puzzling me too.
Now that Soundtracker appears to be broken on debian/lenny,
I've been looking for a replacement.
Renoise is pretty good but its not free ( as in speech or beer )
and it didn't seem to synch long samples too well against a rhythm
section built of one-shots.

Of the free trackers available Milkytracker is IMHO my opinion the front
runner. some of the others are promising but most seem to be suffering
from lack of development work.
The GUI is a bit fiddly on Milkytracker, but its no more difficult to
use than soundtracker, just different.
And it sounds good. The developers seem very keen on reproducing the
sound of the Fasttracker II audio engine. I don't know FT II but
Milkytracker sounds tight and crispy.
My main problem with MT was that the jack driver didn't work.

which also solved my other problem: how to export only selected
instrument tracks to wav. MT's export function exports the whole thing
regardless of mute settings. ( that's got to be a feature request. )

Renoise is the best sample-based tracker on the planet, regardless of
platform. On the other hand there's Aldrin, which is modular and
softsynth based. It's also good, some might say better than Renoise, but
they're a bit hard to compare since the approaches are quite different.
Play around with them both and see what you like. For me I use both, but
lately I've been mostly playing with Aldrin, since then I don't need to
worry about samples that much.

Of course you can. They're good, but limited in number and mainly
focused on synthetic sound. I do not think they're meant to be used as a
complete sample library. For more free sounds/samples you should check
freesound.org. You can use linuxsampler with renoise through midi.
Renoise supports jack fully (apart from transport), so you can
interconnect it with any jack app.
