Thanks for putting together this great video. Really useful for me as I've
just started experimenting with Ardour 3.0 in order to keep my MIDI use as
barebones as possible and not have to open Rosegarden (as great a tool as it
is). The use of A2J and velocity control where particularly useful bits of
info for me. I do have a question or two which aren't strictly Ardour 3.0
related but are pertinent to your tutorial:
1) I watched in envy as you ran A2J and plugins, alongside Ardour, and that
xrun counter stayed green. When I try and do the same, I get one-off xruns
upon A2J command and then again when trying to load plugins. Any idea why? I
don't think it's related to buffer size as I don't get continuous xruns (or
any at all) after loading the session - only on loading of apps. I'm a
perfectionist and even though those one-off xruns probably won't affect my
ability to record sound, their presence annoys me.
2) Your QJackCtl Session seemed to save and then load A2J seamlessly. When I
save a session which includes A2J, that session doesn't include A2J again
when loaded. Any ideas?

Paul is 220% busy finishing Ardour 3.0 right now but there is nothing
more I'd love than to see him, Torben or any of our other JACK experts
to do an 'Introduction to JACK' video (aka xrun killa) that would let
me shave 10m or so off this vid. In answer to your question- I dunno!

The fact that a2jmidid got mentioned at all was almost by accident as
I practiced the vid under ALSA which is what I normally use and don't
need it there thanks to the seq MIDI driver. Honestly, I'd never tried
A2J w/ a JACK session before I created this video so I'm wondering
about this myself now. I'm sure Rui can tell you what the deal is with
this.

yes. i agree with most of the observations about length & subject matter.
i suspect that this sort of thing might best be done as a series of
very short videos rather than one long one. i don't know of any
particularly good video intros to JACK.

I knew when creating this video that there was no way I could please
everyone and it would be at least twice as long if I'd attempted to be
anything near comprehensive so the best I could do was to please
myself with a semi-improv, most-of-the-basics monolith. If there was a
good vid about JACK then I'm sure you'd know of it so I'm glad I
included all the 'Intro to Linux Audio' preamble.
A notable omission from my vid was the revision of A3 I used which was
9170. I really wanted to cover regions better but that still has
issues in alpha3 so I had to drop it. If I re-did it I'd also cover
looping but thats pretty easy to work out anyway so its not one I'm
losing sleep over. I just couldn't wait any longer to make the video
and I'd encourage more people to upload their vids to archive.org as
it supports HTML5 video and ogg, as those of you who have watched my
vid will have likely noticed.
One important thing I did learn making this video is that KDEnlive is
a beautiful piece of software now - I bet many Windows users would be
very jealous if they knew what a great free video editor we have now-
theres nothing that good for free under Windows. All I ask is JACK
support and full-screen previewing and I'm there. I really enjoy using
it and the whole process of creating the video made me realise just
how far Linux multimedia production has advanced in the last 12
months.

What CPU do you have (grep "model name" /proc/cpuinfo)?
Have you made the limits.conf hack to enable realtime and are you
running jack in realtime (with say -P70)?
Are you running jack with über-low latency; what's the frames/period setting?
