About SoundFonts:
(reply to robert's soundfonts rants)
i havent used soundfonts at all (never), i was
planning to use them as a last resort not because
everybody has a bad attitude towards sf, but what
youve said that theyre monolithic, when im composing
i like to make new samples and load them in-the-fly to
a sampler and then process the sample more with fx and
stuff... and again... render to wave and then load- it
again... maybe change some rythmic structures and then
render again to audio and maybe the complete audio
chunk load it as a whole audio track in ardour or some
audio seq software with mixer to further process!!!
thats the way i like to make music, so the point is
that soundfount could let me achieve this easily? or
is it difficult to compile your own soundfonts... the
other problem i think ill encounter is that sequencers
cant record the audio directly from your soundcards
wavetable... (please correct if im wrong)...
on the other hand ive been searching for sf and ive
realized that maybe they will be very useful to me
because you can load pre-made drum kits like a TR-909
for example and use them easily just as if you had the
real midi module...
another question: my soundcard has 4 synths built in
right? does this means i can load 4 soundfont banks at
the same time???
on the other hand ive realized specimen is a great
sampler: everything i need (preview .wav, map
different regions, loop point editor, filter, though
more different filters would be very very nice...) and
i didnt know you could use it directly from rosegardan
through alsa midi , that excelent, just as if
specimen was a plug in, i can trigger samples from my
midi keyboard with an inperceptible latency, now i
would like to know several more things, like how to
apply ladpsa plugins to the sampler for example if i
want to use some of the ladpsa filters... how is the
audio routed from specimen back into the midi host
mixer (it displays audio in a channel called rec... )
but it has no slots for plug ins...
anyone knows how to do this??? could this be done? or
do i have to record the audio and then process it in a
standard audio track ?

The generic answer to "how do I add effects to this JACK app that
doesn't immediately appear to support them?" is to use jack-rack,
which is a very nice standalone JACK effects rack, hosting LADSPA
plugins. Run it up and then connect the output of your other JACK
app (Specimen in this case) into jack-rack using the qjackctl audio
connection manager.
(I can't remember offhand whether Specimen always outputs to JACK or
whether it also has direct ALSA output. You will obviously need to
have it outputting to JACK and have jackd running [via qjackctl for
example] to do this.)

output of Specimen or jack-rack or whatever.

other thing is that i bought the sb audigy just for
using it with the asio drivers, but with jack you
dont need that right? would a standart cheapo
soundcard work this way? with the same latency? (using
the planet ccrma stuff ) im asking this because one
friend of mine wants to buy a soundcard just to do the
same thing, play with softsynths realtime (low
latency) from the midi keyboard... maybe a sb live
would do the job?

My cheapy SB Live 5.1's would do 512x2 no problems on a slower machine.
256x2 was a bit touchy but did work on the 2.4.28 kernel running as
root.
No ASIO! No WDM...No freakin' proprietary junk here~ :)

Pretty much, it depends on the driver quality and card quality, generally the
cards are capable of it though.

an sb-live would not be a problem. There was a bug in alsa earlier that
prevented you to go below 512x2 in duplex (though only playback is needed in
this configuration so it's a non issue, good to know though), that should be
fixed by now.
512x2 is perfectly usable for me though..

The whole JACK and ALSA-seq routing thing is really incredibly
involving. (For more instant gratification, I recommend connecting
freqtweak into the mix. Freqtweak and jack-rack together can give
you hours of fun out of the simplest one-note melody. Another thing
that for some reason always tickles me is the JACK output plugin for
xmms: there's something kind of thrilling about being able to play
ripped mp3 and ogg files through an effects rack or straight into an
audio recorder without leaving the comfort of your usual mp3 player.)

Right. The latencies available will depend on the particular ALSA
drivers and the hardware, but will generally be better than you would
expect without dedicated ASIO drivers or equivalent on Windows.

Some soundcards are just crap (e.g. SB 128 PCI), so you always have to
take that into account. But:

Yes. Popular budget choice, works very well, will do everything

the net for old drum machines!

I'm not sure you said what soundcard you had, but with four separate synths it
sounds like an sb-live right?
It was a while since I tried this (I generally run fluidsynth which also uses
soundfonts), I think they use the same "synth engine" though, so they have
the same sounds. You can have a different sound for all 16 midi channels
though, I recall it is somewhat hard to load fonts on all channels though,
quite a bit easier with a softsynth like fluidsynth (especially with a
frontend like Qsynth or the one in MusE).

This is, as Chris mentioned, done with a mixer application, like Jack-rack
(pending that specimen can output to jack, but I think it does). I think you
could use Rosegarden as the mixer application also, I use MusE like this, add
an input and connect the jack-app to it, this limits the number of apps I
need to keep track of and most settings are stored in one place.

you can generally set it to record from several sound sources, including the

I don't know what card you have, but I have a soundblaster and just
loaded up a soundfont to the wave table with "sfxload"... used kaconnect
to connect the midi keyboard to the wavetable... went to an xterm and
stared alsamixer... set the capture on "Music" in alsamixer (left and
right arrow keys to move around... and the spacebar to choose "capture",
you'll see "CAPTUR" at the top of the "Music" control). Then I
raised
the levels on "Music Ca" in alsamixer. I used ecasound to record the the
output of the wavetable to an audio file.
It never seems to be that easy though. The controls are pretty confusing
and there always seems to be a control that needs to be set or unmuted
in conjunction (press "m" to toggle mutting). But if you use QAMix or
KAMix, they are grouped in a more logical way and are easier to work with.
KAMix is basically the same mixer as QAMix. It's just QAMix for the KDE
desktop.
Turning up the wrong control or unmutting the wrong control is a great
way to make the card scream or cause infinte feedback loops.
Momma don't like when the card screams. She says the card makes her ears
hurt.

Yes, the emu10k1 chipset has a nightmare mixer. It's actually got 2, one for
the digital domain and an AC97 codec for analog. Or something. Most GUI
mixers don't have all the controls. Gamix does

The AC97 capture port is the culprit more often than not. It's also something
to look at when distortion and mystery echo are happening.

Soundfonts are just a unified format/architecture for sample playback.
In this case "sample" means wavetable synthesis.
You can use them for storing loops, and raw samples..
You can do a lot of your comping nondestructively. You may have to learn
"another instrument" as it were, because you'll have to work with the
available tools for soundfont editing.

Use Specimen's jack driver, then patch through jack-rack
or another plug-in host

When I was working with soundfonts, I used the smurf soundfont editor.

It's new name is "swami" but I couldn't get swami to work. I can't
remember if I spent the time to read the smurf docs but not the swami
one? You can try both and see how they work for you. It just seems to me
that smurf worked without a hastle, but I really had to mess with swami.
I don't even remember if I got swami to work. But smurf works well.
I'm excited about speciman because I find soundfonts to be a very
(un)flexible way to put instrument sets together. And it seems a bit
complicated (but made more sense as I used smurf).

I don't even remember if I got swami to work. But smurf works well.
I'm excited about speciman because I find
soundfonts to be a very
(un)flexible way to put instrument sets together. And it seems a bit
complicated (but made more sense as I used smurf).
Power of the GUI. I've only looked at Specimen briefly and it looks adequate.
Coming from me, that's a pretty good evaluation. (I'm jaded)

I was holding my breath while reading this paragraph. I'm very glad
the program has worked for you so far, please send me any bugs you
encounter, or any feedback in general. More filters are definitely on
the way, but a more useful en route feature is giving each patch
a pair of jack outputs (more on this below).
I'm pleased that Specimen currently has everything you need, but I
hope to present it in a vastly more useable and attractive manner with
the new GUI currently being developed. While the current GUI may be
technically complete (for very small values of "complete"), it isn't
quite a joy to work with.
now i would like to know several more things, like how
to apply
ladpsa plugins to the sampler for example if i want to use some of
the ladpsa filters... how is the audio routed from specimen back
into the midi host mixer (it displays audio in a channel called
rec... ) but it has no slots for plug ins...

Specimen via jack-rack. However, since it only has one pair of output
ports, using effects is a sub-optimal experience (to put it nicely).
When each patch has it's own port, the situation will be much better.

Will the design be for user definable ports?
I'm not familiar with Specimen and don't know how you
define a patch. Assuming that a patch is an instrument
and a drum kit could be eight instruments (one patch)
then the drum kit patch could be eight 1in/2out ports
for a total of 16. It isn't difficult to begin
exausting available ports.
In my mind a routing system similar to that in Ardour
would be interesting because the user can manage
physical and user defined ports in anyway that fits
their audio hardware and personal preferences.
I don't think having one master bus output to hardware
is ideal either because a user might want to process
the snare drum in a rackmount reverb that's connected
to a hardware mixer.
I don't really know what you're designing but thought
I'd make a few assumptions and toss a couple half
baked thoughts in your direction.

This is actually difficult to answer, because I'm not familiar
with traditional sampling terminology (I find it to be generally
impenetrable when I do encounter it). Specimen has no notion
of an "instrument" per se. Its vocabulary is as follows:
* Patch: a sample and the parameters controlling how it should be
played. Later, patches will be given the ability to contain
multiple samples.
* Channel: there are 16 channels corresponding to the 16 standard MIDI
channels. Each channel can have any number of patches assigned to
it (so long as that number doesn't exceed the global limit on
patches).
* Bank: a bank is the collection of all 16 channels and any global
parameters that have been set.
So, an instrument might be just one tb303 patch. Or it might be a set
of patches on Channel 3 that serve as a drumkit. The choice is up to
the user.
By default, Jack outputs are provided at the Bank level (and they must
always be present). The plan is to allow channels and patches to have
Jack output themselves, if the user so desires, on an individual
entity basis.

asinine.
Specimen creates a pair of master outputs and connects them to the
first set of available hardware outputs that it finds, but you're free
to connect them to whatever you want.
