How does this compare to for example a delta 1010lt or a firewire interface?
If all you want is 2 in and out with mic pres, I would say that is a
fair way to go.
If you buy this mixer, you may find yourself wanting a slightly better
on though. If you use the mixer strictly for mic pre-amps, then it is
fine.
If you are willing to consider Behringer brand (some people hate them),
you could get a bit more mixer for a bit less money from that web wite
with the XENYX 802. The Soundcraft Classic 4 also looks better, and
that is a great brand. I haven't used either of these specific mixers
though.
Personally, I have an 10 channel Yamaha unit, which is about $20 more
than the Mackie you mention, but I believe that mine has been
discontinued. I would have gone for the Behringer, but I put off buying
anything until I needed it the next day and the Yamaha was what I could
find locally.

That is not the Yamaha I have. It looks similar, except that one looks
a bit nicer than mine. Mine has no compressors is the first difference
I notice. This one also looks to be physically smaller than mine. It
also costs less than mine (mine was gotten in early April '07).
Looking around, it appears that mine is no longer a current product and
that that is the replacement.
I've never heard anyone say that Yamaha is known for their great
preamps, but the ones in my Yamaha mixer are certainly servicable. I've
used them with SM58s, Beta58s, and SM57s, as well as a few Audio
Technica wireless units.

But that seem like a rather strange and pointless thing to do as mixer
would have it's own preamps and the whole point of using an Art Tube MP
is that it is probably a lot better than the mixers preamps.
Personally, I don't have any mics of my own yet. Sometime after I get
some, I do plan to buy a ART Tube MP to try out comparing with my
Lexicon's preamps and the yamaha preamps to see if I can actually tell
the difference.

starved" killing headroom/freq response. I haven't looked at the specs
but I bet that they also choose the wrong tube if they did go for
12AX7s since 12AU7s sound much better at lower plate voltages.
You can ask any tube guru you know about that, I am sure he'll confirm
what I am saying.
I wasn't aware of those issues until I started building tube amps
myself and experimenting with different supply voltages.
I'd rather buy an all solid state device with a low supply voltage, it
would sound way better.
