The youtube-dl script all of a sudden stopped working today.
I went to their website and there's only one issue open on this, from several days
ago, no replies, seems to be no action on this.
Is youtube-dl actively maintained? Did Google make it impossible for youtube-dl to work
anymore? What's the story? Is anyone working on fixing this? Are there alternatives
that actually still work?

Aren't there add-ons for Firefox which can fetch youtube content?
I haven't tried them. But, I've seen them in the add-on site.

youtube is pretty much the most important site now though, but I start
to dislike it more and more due to stuff like:
"Content was removed due to copyright claims from Lucas Arts"
or
"This bbc video is not available outside the UK"
Sure, we don't have enough borders yet, we need some more virtual ones.

TM++ doesn't work with Youtube as far as I know, because Youtube uses plain
old HTTP to grab videos and TM++ is for RTMP streaming, which no browser
plugin will currently handle.
And you do have to let the file play in the flash applet in order for TM++
to grab it; you just don't need sound turned on. The last time I used it
was to grab a friend's song from his Myspace account, or maybe it was
ReverbNation. Can't think offhand of which sites stream video that way,
but I've encountered a few.
Anyway, TM++ is something to be used as a fallback for those sites that
aren't, and likely will never be, supported by the various Firefox
extensions out there that work by scraping the site. Downloadhelper still
works on Youtube as of when I tried it just now, but they may have come out
with an update in the last few days without my noticing it.

TM++ doesn't work with Youtube as far as I know, because Youtube uses plain
old HTTP to grab videos and TM++ is for RTMP streaming, which no browser
plugin will currently handle.
And you do have to let the file play in the flash applet in order for TM++

I noticed the same thing, worked one or two days ago, but today I get:
ERROR: no known formats available for video
Maybe it has to do with webm or they changed some other stuff, no idea.

But something very similar happened to me a couple of months back, and
after sometime I noticed there was a new version available, that
worked again.
I think it's just as Philipp mentions, "something" on youtube changed
that made the current youtube-dl incompatible and hopefully a fix will
be available soonish.

I stopped using youtube-dl a long time ago, you will find your complete file
in your /tmp-folder when it's fully loaded in the browser:
ls -l /tmp/Flash*
And then you can do something like this:
cp /tmp/FlashXXxsHs3S ~/myflashfile.flv

Try "Youtube without Flash Auto" .js script with the Greasemonkey extension.
You can then download the actual mp4, or play it in Ff via mplayer or

I believe there was an update in the hg repository at 5:02PM today.
That is currently working fine for me.

I use Download Helper in Firefox, but don't know how useful it would be
if you can't see the graphical display. :-(

2010.07.14-1 and it worked just two or 3 days ago, but not any more. the
error is the same phillip has: ERROR: format not available for video
