Hi Fernando,
So that GPG key works. I just included the URL to the file on the net
insteadd of downloading the file. This is probably defeating the
purpose of the GPG because people could theoreticaly modify a rpm and
change the key on your site at the same time, but that seems unlikely.
I am encountering some problems though. Probably descrepancies between
the livna repository and the ccrma repository. Can you tell me if I am
correct?
yum -y update
[lots of messages here...]
Error: Missing Dependency: libavcodec.so.51 is needed by package xine-lib
Error: Missing Dependency: faad2 = 0:2.0-0.lvn.5.4 is needed by package
xmms-faad2
And it ends there. Just to see if it was missing some file I built from
source I ran:
rpm -qa | grep faad
xmms-faad2-2.0-0.lvn.5.4
faad2-2.0-0.lvn.5.4
rpm -qla | grep libavcodec
/usr/lib/libavcodec-CVS.so
/usr/lib/libavcodec.so
/usr/lib/libavcodec.so.51
So the files are there (and are from RPM's in the livna repository) so
I guess the problem is that CCRMA is trying to overwrite these files:
am I right?
Is there a way to get the CCRMA files to use the livna files?
How can I tell if the versions are compatable?

and then install xine-lib (or whatever it is you want to install)?
We don't know if the package dependencies are clean in your rpm
database, I think. Yum can work (AFAIK) with an rpm database where
dependencies are not clean, apt can't. I don't know if there is a way in
yum to check dependencies (to make sure all are currently satisfied).

That is where I am confused. I just run "yum update" and it dies on
libavcodec and faad2.

I already installed ardour from ccrma, as well as its requirements of
jack and some other packages. I had built jack and qjackctl from source
before so that was really just an rpm database thing. I guess I am
trying to get the ccrma kernel installed and the dependancy tree gets
snagged on libavcodec and faad2 (probably because of alsa or something).
It seems to me that the livna repo has the best media "use" tools (like
xine, totem, ati-fglrx, etc) and the ccrma repo has the best media
"creation" tools (like lsm kernel, pd, ardour, etc) and so if I get the
two to play nice I will have the best of both worlds.

troubleshoot this. I can't make up my mind on which side is breaking
things.
Try removing the Planet CCRMA urls from the yum configuration file, and
then doing a "yum update".

troubleshoot this. I can't make up my mind on which side is breaking
things.
Try removing the Planet CCRMA urls from the yum configuration file, and
then doing a "yum update".
I relocated my /etc/yum.repos.d/planetCCRMA.repo file and ran yum -y
update and a few things updated but nothing having to do with faad
ffmpeg. Everything worked fine. Then I moved the file back and ran
update again and I got the fault with libavcodec and faad2 again.
I will attach the whole of the yum execution below.

Yes, I've been playing around with Kanotix a lot lately too. Very
impressive.
I've gotten a very stable 2.9ms running a vanilla 2.6.15.4 kernel with
rt_preempt patched into it with realtime-lsm on my AMD 64+3500/Maudio
Delta 44. This is using qjackctl and ardour. Haven't tried PD or
anything else on it yet.

What's the best usable latency now? What kernel are you using? 2.6.14
or 2.6.15 should be good.

Try that before you resort to patching the kernel.
IIRC PD is not the best designed RT app (GUI stuff can delay the RT
threads), but this might have improved lately.

I just tried with Ubuntu's dapper's stock 2.6.15 kernel. Jackd runs at 44100Hz
samplerate and buffersize 256 samples (5.8ms periods). Hardware is an AOpen

Yup, that's very close to my results. Does the frequency of xruns
decrease, or just the length?
The remaining xruns are likely to be related to route cache flushing
which is still being worked on. There's no workaround yet.

reason I can imagine. The maximum IO size is determined by whether
48-bit addressing is in use which is determined by - wait for it - the
size of the drive! The sata drive is bigger than the IDE right?

Hello Fernando and all,
So I am running the 2.6.14-0.10.rrt.rhfc4.ccrma kernel!
And rpmdevtools are going to make building the livna.org tools like
ndiswrapper really easy, so that is good. But yum can't find
kernel-devel! Where is the ccrma kernel-devel rpm?
And where is the realtime kernel module?
Does the ccrma kernel not come with the lsm kernel module?
Modprobe realtime returns in error and in a quick search of
/lib/modules/2.6.14-0.10.rrt.rhfc4.ccrma I can't find realtime.ko
What does the ccrma kernel include? I see that PREEMPT comes up after
uname -ar so I guess ingo's spinlocking patches are included, right? I
guess I can just build the lsm module myself, perhaps as an rpm for
neetness...
Of course I would need kernel-devel for that too...
It is kewl though to get ccrma - the source of all good prepackaged
audio tools - and livna - the source of some code that contains some
non-gpl'd stuff (to use until linksys and ati release some opensource
drivers) - to play nice togeather though!

/etc/security/limits.conf should take care of your realtime access with
later kernels.

'Cept I thought that you set the priority from within the application...
I understand that it is best to run jack at a higher priority then your
audio application to ensure no XRUN's. Is that true? Can I still set
the priority in qjackctl for jackd and it will override the settings in
limits.conf?
