Hello everyone. I'm hoping to invest in a Linux-based (debian) system to do
high-quality recording of live sources (mics, turntable mixer out, etc) and
playback of multichannel (4 channel, maybe more someday) computer music. I
have made music with CLM but am excited to try using Csound, as well as
Ecasound and Ardour for recording and editing. I've been looking around and
asking questions to vendors and have heard the following suggestion for
hardware: a Hammerfall soundcard and an external ADI-8AE AD/DA converter. I
wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on such a setup. As far as I can
tell, the ALSA drivers support this, although one vendor said that there are
only drivers for the older Hammerfall card. Any thoughts on these things?

That vendor was ill informed. Probably because they don't follow Linux
but instead rely on RME to actually keep their website up to date.

You should also get a mixing desk. The euroracks line have very good
sound quality IMO but they don't use properly balanced inputs. You will
need to get at least one condenser mic as well. They are the best for
recording.

Now Patrick, you should know you can't make blanket statements
like that where audio is concerned :-p
It depends a lot on *what* you're recording, and on the mic
in question. There is certainly no shortage of bad condenser mics
on the market. I'd take a good dynamic mic (Sennheiser MD-421
or 441, EV RE-20, Shure SM-7 to name a few) over crap
(but common) condensers like the AKG CS-1000 any day.
There are many applications where dynamic mics are still
the mic of choice (notably close-miking drums and
amplifiers, but also sometimes rock vocals).
Remember Michael Jackson's "Thriller"? One of the
biggest-selling records ever? They could have
used any microphone in the world for lead vocals, and
they chose a Shure SM-7. Whatever you think of the music,
there's no denying that it's a top-notch pop vocal recording.
And let's not forget ribbon mics.
I would *love* to be able to afford a Royer, but even
a Beyer M-500 or something would be nice to have
and would do pretty well on just about any source
except really really quiet stuff.

need to get at least one condenser mic as well. They are the best for

but agian, you need to do your research and try a lot of things...
and there are general differences between large-diaphragm
and small-diaphragm condensers (e.g. large diaphragms have an
inherent treble peak and other characteristics that tend to
flatter vocalists; small-diaphragm are capable of being more
truly "flat").

The Midiman gear is really easy to use. I have teh Audiophile 24/96 card
and get good results. The Midiman delta 10/10 will get even better results
with its external d-a coverter. I use envy24control for my mixer and have
found its very easy to use. The hammerfall seems like it requires a lot of
hacking to even get basic functionality, while I find that the midiman pci
cards are fully supported. The lastest ones even have a little penguin
symbol on the box.
