Hello,
I have some synth tracks recorded. Now I want to record some
acoustic bass. So I set Ardour's option to monitor using Ardour and I
put on headphones so the mic will only pick up the acoustic bass.
Problem is, there is a slight annoying delay between the sound I hear
from the bass itself and the sound relayed in the headphones. Machine
is x86_64 and system is Fedora 15. Kernel is from Fedora.
Maybe monitoring using hardware (the first option) might give better,
delay-free results. How can this be set up when the system has an
M-Audio 1010LT card and a pair of M-Audio speakers connected as system
1 and 2 outputs ?
Any suggestions/hints about how to monitor acoustic instruments would
be very much appreciated. For the time being I play the recorded
tracks through the speakers at very low volume while recording the
acoustic bass but the speaker sounds leaks into the mic - not so good
at all, but gets things done.

Yes, with that hardware, you should use zero-latency monitoring that
the hardware provides. There is a tool called envy24ctl that you can
use to control the hardware mixer on the 1010LT.

Yes hardware is best. Using envy24control or mudita24, go to the patchbay
tab and select "Digital Mix L" and "Digital Mix R" as your output to
1and
2 outputs. Then on the first tab "Monitor Inputs" unmute the track(s) you
are using for mic in and set the levels where you want. Then goto the next
tab "Monitor PCMs" and set the levels of the audio coming from the Ardour
tracks you already have. That will setup your monitor mix. The ardour
inputs will see the levels set by the analog volume controls

envy24control nor mudita24 on the system and, doing a 'yum list' does
not return any package with 'envy' or 'mudi'. The repo directoy
in /etc/yum.repos.d/ has livna, fedora and ccrma.
The system has alsamixer and it was possible to assign HW and HW/1 to
In0 and In1, but that's about it so far. I'd rather try with
envy24control. Is the package containing this utility bears the same
name ? Would you recommend envy24 or mudita24 - any significant
difference between the two ?

In gentoo, the package that has envy24control is called "alsa-tools" Not
sure if that helps or not, but I agree - this tool is very handy with a
Delta 1010.

If you atre using h/w and h/w 1, you want to set them to "Digital". Then
you would set Mutli left to full and multi 1 to right full (these are
ardours ourputs). Then hit F4 to go to capture. go over to H/W Multi and
set the level where you want to monitor the input. (this assumes one mic
in input one) Using F5 (all) seems like a nice answer, but ends up
confusing things in this case.
Ya, envy24control is lots easier. I've been looking at QASmixer also,
still painful but nicer than alsamixer.

Works quite nicely. Moreover, I found out that it is possible to
route, using QJackCtl, individual Ardour track outputs to other playback
inputs (3,4,5, ... 1 and 2 being for Ardour's main mix) and then create
a custom monitoring mix using envy24control. That's great.
Although it seems the number of Ardour tracks can easily outgrow the
number of system playback inputs. I've never used busses in Ardour.
Next I will try to group certain tracks in a bus, then have the output
of a bus routed in a system playback input.
Is it possible to save and recall envy24control and QJackCtl
setups to save time in wiring stuff ?

You can save several setups in Envy24ctrl, and the same in QJackCtl, so
you may have ie. "record setup", "mix setup", "what you like
setup" in
both of them and recall with 2 clicks... Or save a command line to a
desktop launcher and recall the 2 in one click... Or ?

I haven't had much chance to continue with this setup since then.
Today I'm trying to monitor a hardware synth going through a LADSPA
echo effect, set in Ardour. The echo would be used in such a way as an
integral part of the playing, and not jut as a cosmetic add-on. Is it
possible to monitor the output of the Ardour synth track + the LADSPA
delay which is patched after Ardour's volume control for that track (I
also tried patched before it) ? Ardour shows that there is signal
coming in. Sounds go out only in playback mode.
Is it possible to monitor it w/o Ardour actively recording and with
Ardour recording ? I have connected the track's L+R output to playback
3 and 4 using QJackCtl, but the envy24 VUs are not showing any signal.
Hmmmm... I reckon that it might be not so easy to picture the setup.

envy24 monitor PCMs are all very quiet, nothing.
Ardour's track gets capture 7 and 8. LADSPA echo is added pre or
post. Signal is shown in Ardour. No audio heard. After recording, at
playback, audio is heard, shown on envy24 monitor PCM 1 and 2.
How can the signal with the echo added be heard w/o recording ?
Any hints/suggestions would be greatly appreciated !

I have added an insert post-fader on that Ardour track, then edited
that fader to specify output playback 3 and 4. Now it is possible to
hear the LADSPA delay on that track when playing the hardware synth
but, only in record mode, shown in envy24 as monitor PCM 3 and 4.
A bit annoying since all practice and delay adjustments has to
be done while Ardour is actively recording. Is it possible at all to
monitor via hardware any effect that's assigned on a track w/o actively
recording ? Card is M-Audio 1010LT. Using envy24 control. Thanks
