Hello everyone1
|Well more of a sound test and proof of concept. It leaves a lot to be
desired, such as better playing, more thought, more frizzling effects... You
get the picture. Still I wanted to share it.
An attempt at dubstep:

It's mainly my NordLead3 (virtual analogue synth). the bass is made up of 24
stacked oscillators multiplied by the five oscillators used for its unison
mode. Everything else - except for the drumkit - is NordLead too. The drumkit
is Korg Triton. It will do for now. Maybe some time later, I will go back and
do something more elaborate and honestly ernest with it. :-)
Any feedback on the sounds and basic production is welcome.

Hah, well, that's a departure! It's fun,
actually. I'd like the
laser-gun like synth to back a notch and have some reverb on it, perhaps
a touch more bass and the drum a little closer: it wants a little of
that "in your brain" thumping thythm section which seems to be key for
this type of music. Cool sounds!

thank you too. The laser-gun like synth? do you mean the one doing the lead,
or the sound amidst the bass line? If it's the latter, then this is part of
the bass patch. I know, that the bass still doesn't sound bassy enough. I have
a feeling, that the EQ'ing should be more extreme still, or I should reduce
the patch by one or two oscillators and then mix it with another sound on my
Nordlead, to get more pressure in the low frequency band.
I have done somuch to this mix already, that I wouldn't consider for
anything else: overlimiting, compressing the whole mix until it bleed and
pumped... It seems, that there is still a lot more to learn. :-)
good to hear, that the sounds basically fit the bill.

I enjoyed it, and that bass synth patch is just insane, but for some reason it reminded me
of this:

I didn't understand dubstep until I saw that video actually. Then I got it: "oh,
it's dance-club metal! Metal you can dance to, using electronic instruments instead of
guitars." I was perplexed by industrial music in the 90s until I had this exact same
revelation.
Or, as Butthead put it: "The only thing better than a band that gets chicks, is a
band that SCARES chicks. Huh-huh." Industrial and dubstep: dance music with
testosterone.

Shit man, why is that video so short? :-) Thanks for the tip Ken, I liked
that. A mix of being helpful and music instructor, which was a dance duo in
the 90s. :-) One important bit they missed however: breaking the beats.

about that sound or similar sounds (no link to give, but
there is a kind of sound close to it where people also
put kind of a wah effect on it from time to time; the sound
is "grainy", I don't know how to describe it; it's close

Hello Sedric!
The sound I did was based on a square wave with a distrotng filter. The
sound in the dubstep class, sounds like it might be based on one of those
filter white noises. The Nordleads have that. What they essentially do - as I
have read so far - is modulate volume, filter and pitch. Sometimes by LFO,
sometimes perhaps by the sequencer software/manual manipulation. In the video,
it sounds like a lot of cut-off frequncy modulation. I think he had more than
one filter there. Because there are the occasional bits, where the bass
sounds, like it's pronouncing a vowel, this is typically achieve by at least
to filters in paralel. How exactly he modulates them... No idea. But I'm sure
you can think of a few things yourself.
It's always a good idea to double the oscillators by some technique. Either
you have a unison feature, or stack... What they do is stack notes of your
patch on one key, using up polyphony. The notes then are slightly detuned and
distributed in the stereo panorama.
I hope, this is essentially what you wanted to know. If you're looking for
more dubstep, there are radio stations - definitely accessible from Linux -,
which play nothing else. :-) A friend posted three links to me once. I should
still have them, if you're interested.
