About 8-9 years ago I attempted to record video and on-board sound along with
an external microphone. There were two programs I tried, Record My Desktop,
and (I think) Simple Screen Recorder.
I couldn't get either of them to manage the microphone, and only one to include
stereo audio - and even that was a struggle (can't remember which one).
I'm wondering what the current situation is for the best possible prospect of
doing this. I won't be using a camera, but want to be able to use a microphone
for voiceover, so that of course would be mono.
Also I envisage doing this in comparatively short sections, then stitching
them all together afterwards to make a seemingly continuous vid.
Can anyone make suggestions. The kit I'll be using will have an earlier 4 core
AMD Ryzen, with a reasonably modern Radeon GPU card and connected to an M-Audio
Mtrack 8.

OBS Studio is pretty good for pasting together several sources
(including application windows) into one or several "scenes" and then
recording (or streaming, or injecting into a videoconference via
v4l2loopback device) a sequence of live sources embedded into switched
scenes.
Check out <https://youtu.be/Vn1f70IH-Es?t=755> for some stuff where I
pasted commentary over the slides of a presentation and then did a
mix-in commentary with a preexisting video, bringing in various (live)
application windows to illustrate what I am talking about.
While several such passages (and the transitions) were done with OBS
Studio, the final output was then stitched together using Shotcut. Also
the live commentary was overlong and I had numerous excursions into
irrelevant matter: cutting stuff out from the original OBS Studio take
was also done in Shotcut.

+1 for OBS and Shotcut. At a minimum, software I installed has to be
a) Open source licensed
b) Available as binaries for Windows, Linux and MacOS that don't
trigger Windows' "unknown source" warnings.

I haven't seen Openshot come up in this convo as an alternative to Shotcut.
For most things, I prefer a webpage or manual, but video editing is
actually something I don't mind videos of, and FWIW, I'm rather fond
of the video

There are only two video editors on Linux that I would recommend.
1. Blender.
Rock solid. Bespoke UI, but many good tutorials on YouTube. For instance,

I have edited dozens of videos with Blender.
2. Olive.
I haven't worked with it, but unfa uses it as his main editor. It seems to
be a very promising project. According to unfa, it does crash from time to
time, but not too much. Definitely, not on the OpenShot level. So, should
be safe.
The rest I was never able to use. I hear relatively good things about
KDEnlive, but it never worked for me. Openshot 2 I consider almost a
literal open source scam ("award winning" software where I am yet to be
able to even import a video without it either crashing or freezing, tested
on 4 different laptops, across three versions of Ubuntu).
I am surprised to see several people mention Shotcut. Last time I tried it
was either 2017 or 2018 - and it was unusable. After all, it is the UI over
the same library that Openshot 1 used. But hey - maybe it improved.

With the caveat that my workflow largely matches a lot of live music videos
- linear timecode audio into CH1 of each camera, professional stem
mastering in post - this 900 line bash script created all the multi camera

I've used it in the last year - including for the yoshimi+Pd videos done
recently ;-) - and it's really straightforward. A big plus IMHO is that
it supports jack audio natively and the input _is_ stereo (however one
important thing to keep in mind is that the jack ports are created only
once you get to the last screen, so you should remember to do the
connections at that stage).
A nice feature is that you can also pause the take and assign keyboard
shortcuts to actions.
