Apologies for not appending this to the original thread correctly - I
just joined the list.
This is in reference to this thread about jackd2 and X11/dbus:

I had essentially the the same problem as Len when I tried to run jackd:
Failed to connect to session bus for device reservation Unable to
autolaunch a dbus-daemon without a $DISPLAY for X11
This was in Archlinux on a Raspberry Pi, but I had identical problems
under Debian Wheezy on the Raspberry Pi and a "normal" piece of
hardware. I tried setting DISPLAY=:0 but it still didn't solve it.
Incredibly frustrating.
I finally read the man page for dbus-launch and noted that apps which
it started expected to have DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS set correctly in
their session, which it happily provided for them. I also noticed I
already had a dbus-daemon running in the base distro.
The solution was to set the session bus address variable to the path
to that dbus-daemon's socket, like so:
export DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=unix:path=/run/dbus/system_bus_socket
When I did that and tried running jackd again, I got a very specific
permission error that I was able to resolve by granting my user access
to the audio hardware. I added these lines to the other policy
settings in /etc/dbus-1/system.conf :
<policy user="root">
<allow own="org.freedesktop.ReserveDevice1.Audio0"/>
</policy>
I restarted my system-level dbus-daemon, and jackd started right up.
It shouldn't be too tough now to script that so it's always running
when the device starts.
I have no idea if that will work for you but perhaps it will put you
on the right path.

I restarted my system-level dbus-daemon, and jackd started right up.
It shouldn't be too tough now to script that so it's always running
when the device starts.

Correct, with Arch, but the Arch for the Raspberry PI. This is my
first time with Arch, and I had to figure out how to drive their
package manager, but once I got that sorted things went pretty
smoothly.

alignment if you look at dmesg or kern.log. Regardless, the only way I
got around it was with Arch. I suspect it will be worked out by
someone soon under Raspian but it's not there yet.

worth, that's accompanied by a bunch of kernel messages about memory
alignment if you look at dmesg or kern.log. Regardless, the only way I
got around it was with Arch. I suspect it will be worked out by
someone soon under Raspian but it's not there yet.

Yup. When it worked I was probably logged in as root.
Those lines only grant
access to the root user. I'd suggest you
check to be sure they still
refer to the same device name, and that they match the user you're
logged in as. Also make sure to restart the dbus service after your
changes.

Yes I've seen those posts and indeed, it seems the Pi has a hard time
doing isochronous stuff. When I use the -P or -C option of the ALSA
driver JACK starts without complaining.

Miller, of puredata fame, just recently spent time putting together a RasberryPi
image with puredata all set up ... it may have jack set up, its probably worth
taking a looking at it, it was done with the Pi people involved as well.
By the way, apparently they finally finished negotiations with the chip
suppliers and the whole source for everything has just been released in the last
day or so, making it one of the very few completely FLOSS solutions out there.
I would imagine their huge sales helped with those negotiations.

Hi Simon,
Thanks for the info! I'll buy some other SD cards this afternoon and
give this a go. I've also ordered a 512Mb UK made RPi and some casings
and hope to have a fully functional portable digital guitar amp by the
time of LAC2013.
