ROSEGARDEN-4 0.9.8 RELEASED

The Rosegarden team are pleased to announce the release of
Rosegarden-4 0.9.8, an audio and MIDI sequencer and score editor
for Linux.

This release is primarily focused on bugfix, performance and usability
improvements over 0.9.7, including significant optimisations to the
main editing canvas, sequencer and GUI memory leak fixes, faster and
better notation editing and printing, and dozens of other fixes. It
also contains a handful of new features including MIDI mixer window,
ottava and fingering marks in notation, and a redesigned audio segment
manager.
Features of Rosegarden include:
o Score, piano-roll, event list and track overview editors
o MIDI and audio playback and recording with ALSA and JACK
o Audio plugin support using LADSPA
o Score interpretation of performance MIDI data
o MIDI file I/O, Csound, Lilypond and MusicXML export
o Clear and consistent KDE-based user interface
o Shareable device (.rgd) files to ease MIDI portability
o User interface in Russian, Spanish, German, French, Welsh,
Italian, Swedish and Estonian, as well as UK and US English.

Btw, i'd like to know if it's possible to modify velocity of key pressed
on external keyboard in realtime ?
I mean for example, if key pressed on external keyboard gives 50 of
value, and if the parameter of velocity is +20, rosegarden would modify
this value, and gives 70.
I know it's very common on sequencer on windows (cubase, logic audio),
but on rosegarden is it possible ?

Excuse my ignorance, because I'm not a keyboard player, but isn't it
easier just to hit the keys a bit harder? I think that's the
traditional method of modifying velocity in real time : )

It's not necessarily a keyboard *player* thing. It might be a keyboard
thing. Many older keybaords were not velocity sensitive and all key
presses are given the same MIDI velocity. (50? 128? Who knows?) ;-)
Sometimes you want the velocity shifted up, sometimes down. It depends
on what keyboard and what synth.

I believe the original post is essentially asking for a specific kind
of MIDI filter. Personally I would like to see a programmable MIDI patch
bay with such filtering capabilities as channel filtering, velocity
modification, and controller mapping. That would be extremely useful for
us MIDI-only types.
Btw, my Casio CZ101 transmits velocity only at a value of 64, so a
filter could be useful for balancing this keyboard with other MIDI
instruments. It has no mod wheel or MIDI volume controll (cc 7), but a
filter could remap the output from the CZ pitch bend wheel. Old stuff,
really, common on old MS-DOS and Atari MIDI sequencers.

I would like this too. I haven't had much time or energy to play with
it yet (super busy, and too burnt out when not super busy), but
McCallum's Pd abstractions were suggested when I asked about filtering
NRPN's to CC's.

Also, I previously found Div's MIDI utilities, which could be changed to
fit a specific purpose.

In Cubase these days, they have MIDI VST plugins, which is a pretty neat

I'm sure you folks have worked hard to get this release out. Thanks for
all the hard work.
It's probly too early for this, but I would love to hear people's
experience with using Rosegarden for recording audio. I'm a dedicated
ecasound user and have a hard time ever beleiveing that anyone (in any
project) will come up with a multitracker that will even come close to
ecasound. I plan on using JACK's Transport functionality to be able to
sync ecasound with one of the midi programs. But I'm currious how well
Rosegarden can handle recording mulitracks of audio along with syncing
with midi (i'm talking about the whole deal... (multiple) audio tracks
*and* properly syncing with midi).
While I'm on the subject... does Rosegarden have JACK transport
functionality? If so, how well does it work?

dismal failure. Given the fact that I'm a newcomer to Rosegarden, that's
probably because I'm doing something wrong. The docs are a bit confusing

I haven't upgraded to the current release yet, so doing that might help

Yes it does. To get around the fact that I couldn't get audio into
Rosegarden, I sent the audio output from Rosegarden to Ardour, Worked
like a charm, and the two synchronized nicely through Jack.

Rosegarden and ecasound aren't equivalent in terms of audio. Rosegarden
is primarily a MIDI editor with audio support. I know it works well with
Ardour, but I haven't really made great use of Ardour yet. I also
haven't really worked out how to use Jack to sync things up. I'd love to
know more about this subject.

MIDI controller to edit these parameters in real time would be of
genuine use. It's a fair request IMO. The implementation of such
features, I would guess, requires someone with the necessary skills to
consider it an interesting enough coding problem. ;)
