I'm trying to get my BCF2000 control surface working with Ardour
again. It worked fine before I upgraded to Mandriva 2010.1 (which
subsequently upgraded itself to Mandriva 2010.2). I suspect that
PulseAudio is involved, based on my /var/log/messages output, below

Other than my control surface, Ardour 2.8.11 (compiled locally)
works just fine.
I searched the web for things like the above message. I found
one bug for the "failed to find a working profile" in the
PulseAudio website. That's related to a ThinkPad. I looked
around the PulseAudio website for how to create a profile, and
didn't find anything directly useful. Most of what I found was
about 2 years old and recommended ways to remove PulseAudio from
one's system.
I did find out how to create one PulseAudio profile at this URL:

PCLinuxOS is based on Mandriva, so I'm hopeful that this sort of
recipe might work for the BCF2000. But, it looks like the heart
of getting PulseAudio to work with JACK were the
"load-module module -jack-*"
lines in the .pa file. I don't know what to use for my control
surface. I suspect, without evidence, that if I could create the
correct .pa file with the correct module loading command(s), then
this thing might work. But, I don't know what module(s) to try,
nor even the right name for the .pa file.
Anyone know how to configure a BCF2000 control surface to work
with PulseAudio?
Any suggestions?

The BCF2000 is a MIDI device, and PulseAudio doesn't do MIDI, so it
isn't very suprising that PA whines. However, this doesn't affect
how applications access the BCF2000, because they do so without PA.
Ardour uses Jack, so your problem is probably related to Jack's MIDI
configuration.

Close. Ardour3 will use JackMIDI for this, when I can update the code
to fix some bugs. Ardour2 however uses ALSA, not JackMIDI.
If you are trying to get the BCF working with the Logic control
protocol in Ardour, see here...

That makes my unit /dev/snd/midiC3D0 at this time.
I changed my /etc/ardour2/ardour_system.rc and ~/.ardour2/ardour.rc

The BCF2000 doesn't work. But, I don't expect that it would given
the above INFO regarding that unit.
Before looking at the website instructions I did not have that option

In that case nothing seems to fail in the INFO for the control
surface. But, the control surface still doesn't work.
I tried a few different combinations of settings in ardour2 through
Options -> Control Surfaces, including Generic MIDI, Mackie, and
Feedback. No setting there changes things for me.
I did manage to get ardour to lock up by unchecking the Mackie
option then rechecking it. Control-C was required to abort
ardour. Trying to restart ardour resulting in hanging; I forget
if that was before or after selecting my project. I fixed the
hanging on start-up issue by removing my ~/.ardour2/instant.xml
file.
I went back to my email stash and found 50 some emails on my
BCF2000 from 2007. All of what's in this email, and more, is in
that email. I've got quite a bit of homework to do. I'll report
back. But, if you think of something, please do let me know.

Sorry to take so long to get back to this. As I use tcsh I ran
strace -e trace=open ardour2 |& tee ardour.log
grep /dev ardour.log > ardour_dev.log

For what it's worth. When I move any of the BCF sliders, they
return to their fully lowered position(s) moments later.

I changed my /etc/ardour2/ardour_system.rc and ~/.ardour2/ardour.rc
files to specify:

type="alsa/raw" mode="duplex"/>
and in the <Config> block
<Option name="mackie-emulation" value="bcf"/>
When I start ardour2 now I get this on STDOUT:
WARNING: Your system has a limit for maximum amount of locked memory!
This might cause Ardour to run out of memory before your system runs
out of memory. You can view the memory limit with 'ulimit -l', and it
is normally controlled by /etc/security/limits.conf Ardour uses Jack, so your problem is probably
related to Jack's MIDI
configuration.
Close. Ardour3 will use JackMIDI for this, when I can update the code
to fix some bugs. Ardour2 however uses ALSA, not JackMIDI.

This could be because the port is being used by something else. Try
this: go to Window/Preferences/MIDI and make sure mcu shows up in the
port list (along with control and seq on my system anyway), that it's
online, and that none of MTC, MMC and MIDI Parameter Control are
connected to it.
If that's all correct, try changing your /etc/ardour2/ardour_system.rc
and ~/.ardour2/ardour.rc only after ardour is shut down - sometimes it
overwrites the changed values during shut down.

I am not sure how Mandriva works,
but it looks like that there is passed some parameter during loading
module.
As you worte, before upgrade it used to works. Probably during upgrade the
ids of devices changes.
Try to grep -r 'device_id' /etc/ if it exists somewhere, and adjusts it /
remove.

Other than my control surface, Ardour 2.8.11 (compiled locally)
works just fine.
I searched the web for things like the above message. I found
one bug for the "failed to find a working profile" in the
PulseAudio website. That's related to a ThinkPad. I looked
around the PulseAudio website for how to create a profile, and
didn't find anything directly useful. Most of what I found was
about 2 years old and recommended ways to remove PulseAudio from
one's system.
I did find out how to create one PulseAudio profile at this URL:

PCLinuxOS is based on Mandriva, so I'm hopeful that this sort of
recipe might work for the BCF2000. But, it looks like the heart
of getting PulseAudio to work with JACK were the
"load-module module -jack-*"
lines in the .pa file. I don't know what to use for my control
surface. I suspect, without evidence, that if I could create the
correct .pa file with the correct module loading command(s), then
this thing might work. But, I don't know what module(s) to try,
nor even the right name for the .pa file.
Anyone know how to configure a BCF2000 control surface to work
with PulseAudio?
Any suggestions?
