Hi
My laptop was dropped, and if it's beyond repair, I need a new one
quickly. I would appreciate a few (preferrably hands-on experiences or)
advices to this end, here are a few thoughts:
1) It should of course work as flawless with linux as possible (I run arch)
2) I have an edirol fa66 firewire soundcard that I'm quite happy with.
Problem is, it seems laptops with firewire are hard to find. I could get
an usb soundcard, but I have the feeling that it's not gonna perform as
well (low latency, stability) as firewire, it that correct? Plus it's
annoying to throw away (or sell) a perfectly good, stable soundcard that
suits my needs, just because of the port type...
3) I would prefer a small (<= 13") light-weight, long-battery-life laptop.
4) I actually don't really need that much cpu power. I have a 2Ghz
dual-core intel (T7250, whatever that means) now, that's more than
enough. It's the first dual core I owned, and I had the feeling the two
cores provides a snappier feeling, would others agree? Besides that I
don't need the speed I have now.

I hear very good things about ThinkPads. They seem to be quite durable
and perform well. You should check to see if its Firewire chipset has

My wife has a System76 netbook. All of their hardware works with Linux,
they sell them with Ubuntu 11.04 installed.

going to find any. I'd go with the Thinkpad if the built-in Firewire is
supported by Linux. If the builtin FW isn't supported, you might be able
to use a Firewire expansion card in the Thinkpad's slot.

There are less and less laptops with firewire builtin, you should look for a
pcmcia/pccard slot on your next laptop and get a firewire-card for that

There are netbooks that are capable of audio (not a full-fledged 24 track
ardour session but still). The atoms also did the same transition as desktop-
cpus from single core to single-core-with-hyper-threading to dual-core which
the newest generations is (or is it not yet released?).
I've never seen a netbook with Firewire, though, I

People want low energy and long battery-lifetime. And still they want fast
cpu, large memory, large and fast disks and all the juice from sata, usb(1|2|
3), dvi, hdmi, sd-cards, wifi-n, bluetooth and wwan. Asking for an additional
firewire is a but to much for the little boards and machines. And it drives up
production costs for a feature that is not as wide-spread (sadly). Not to
mention that bus-power for your firewire will drain the battery...
Going for a real notebook instead of a netbook will give you only a bit lower
battery but a bigger screen and firewire (directly or indirectly).

Yes, I'm using a Packard Bell Dot M/A 202 which is the same as the
Gateway LT3103u. Runs quite well but unfortunately I easily manage to
max it out when it comes to CPU usage so I mainly use it as a guitar FX
processor and a mobile station to quickly record/produce ideas. I've got
a L310 CPU for it that is gathering dust, should really put it in one of
these days.

few...) I can edit Ardour-Projects on it that I create on my QuadCore

Are you sure, that you want to run apps like Ardour or complex
Jack-sessions on a netbook-display?
Plus: with a netbook you pay for minimization of weight and size.
Whatever the price may be: you get a stronger machine for the same money
if you choose a standard-laptop and accept some 400 gramms and 10
centimeters more to be carried ;-)
And nothing beats 1400x1050

My 2¢ if you'd buy 2nd hand: Dell D430. Bit old but it does have a
dual-core CPU and onboard FireWire (Ricoh, but it does work afaict).
Build like a tank and relatively cheap, you can get them for €300,- with
warranty.

The "nurple" is actually called the TrackPoint. I first met it when I
had to borrow a Thinkpad to take notes in a meeting. I used it for 45
minutes. After I returned it and went back to my regular desktop
keyboard (sans Trackpoint) I found myself automatically reaching for the
(non-existent) TrackPoint. Found it very easy to control, but I have a
rather light touch. A heavy touch would make it hard to use.
I consider them one of the most ergonomic and best pointing control
devices anyone's made. Although my person favorite pointing device is
still a Wacom graphics tablet.
I can use a touchpad, but I don't really like them. A friend of mine has
been using touchpads for years and years, loves them, etc. It's all a
matter of learning the techniques of rolling the fingertip instead of
moving the finger around.
My wife, on the other hand, dislikes touchpads. She takes a mini-travel
mouse with her when she takes her laptop somewhere. But since she got
her netbook from System76, she's been leaving the travel mouse at home.
Maybe she likes the textured, edgeless touchpad on the Starling better
than the smooth touchpads you usually see on laptops.
So sadly, no vote of confidence for ThinkPads from me,
sorry.

well with linux, but the ergonomics of the keyboards on
them irritate me so much, I'll never use another one.
I'm happy with my T410; I ameliorate the ergonomics
by using a wireless USB mouse, and a compact
USB keyboard.
I disabled the touch pad, otherwise I
get spurious mouse clicks.

noticed if it has any impact on xruns, cuz I usually use external

I don't think I've ever manually changed the backlight level on any of
my various laptops. My wife's netbook automatically dims. I found that
annoying initially, but it brightens back up when you do something with
it, so it's really minor.
Possible that those Fn+key combinations are activated by the laptop's
ACPI BIOS (or equivalent). I doubt many BIOSes are RT safe!

T60 is substantially faster and has a brighter screen and is almost as
cheap nowadays.
The Thinkpad X-series are also very fine machines, but you do have
more to think about with trackpoints (they don't typically have a
trackpad) and screens (not such high resolutions available).

So did I, at great expense. Then the SSD failed about six months later.
Good general warning there -- if you're using an SSD, make sure your
backups are current. Unlike a typical old-fashioned hard drive
failure, you get no warning when an SSD fails and you will lose
everything irrevocably, instantly. And they do still fail relatively
often.

I'm using a Acer TravelMate 5720, its definatly not "high end" anymore so
they're probably cheap enough on the 2nd hand market. Check that it has a
FireWire port (its a 4 pin like most laptops, situated on the left of the
body beside a USB). Its got a Texas Instruments OCHI complaint FW chip.. so
latencies should be good.
Also Core2Duo 2.0 (T7300 iirc), 2gb ram and a 5400 rpm slow HD :)

I have had an X61s for about 3 years now, and it's still working fine. I
really like having a small, neat and easily portable machine. Also the
nipple mouse suits me because you don't have to take your hands away
from the keyboard to use the mouse. Bear in mind that there's no onboard
CD/DVD drive.
I use an M-Audio Firewire solo card with it. It runs well at 4ms jack
latency, and will run at 2ms with some xruns. This is without a great
deal of effort put into tuning my system for low latency, so I could
almost certainly do better than that.
The only thing that I think could cause problems for high end audio work
is that the firewire interrupt is shared with the soundcard and one of
the usb ports. (See below).
The screen size could be a bit limiting (1024x768), but you could always
get an external monitor for some extra space.

is only relevant when running a rt-patched kernel *and* setting up
rt-priorities for IRQ's?
In any case, where do I find a quick (re-)intro to how to tune the IRQ's?

you're welcome.
I've followed that page and I was able to set the IRQ priorities for RTC,
USB and HD USB device.
I have also 2 other soundcards Intel and HDMI both refered as "hda_intel" so
I cannot assing different priorities to both cards.
a minor issue, I think.

Yes, that page is for set the priorities of IRQ handlers, not the IRQ to a
certain device.

Device IRQs might be set is in the actual hardware itself. The
manufacturer might have hardwired that device (such as a USB or Firewire
controller) to a particular hardware IRQ line.
Device itself might be designed to require a particular IRQ. Don't know
if that's true anymore, used to be in the days of the E/ISA buses.
I don't think software can do anything about those situations.
BIOS might have option to change IRQs.

The things labeled A, B, ... are the actual hardware interrupts lines
that go into your chipset's interrupt controller (in the southbridge).
The only mechanism to change which device is connected to which hardware
interrupt line is to put the card in some other PCI(e) slot; for onboard
devices, this connection is literally hardwired. (Actually, many
southbridge chips can use different hardware interrupt lines for the
integrated devices, but there is no motherboard maker that allows to
reconfigure this in the BIOS.)
How these hardware interrupt lines are mapped to interrupt numbers
depends on how modern the OS is.
First, there are the ISA interrupts 0-15, which were the only interrupts
available in the good ol' times of MS-DOS. There are very few ISA
interrupts that are not already used by or reserved for ISA devices.
The mapping from hardware interrupt line to ISA interrupt is what your
BIOS allows you to configure, but this interrupt type isn't used by
Linux unless you disable ACPI.
Second, there are the new PCI interrupts starting at number 16. These
are used when the OS knows how to configure the interrupt controller,
which is one of the things done by ACPI. The mapping from hardware
interrupt line to interrupt number is fixed, i.e., A=16, B=17, etc.
Third, there are message-signaled interrupts (MSIs), which do not use
interrupt lines at all and are always unshared. This is the only
mechanism to get unshared interrupts for devices that are connected to
the same hardware interrupt line. In theory, MSI support is required
for all PCI Express devices, but in practice, MSIs are not supported by
older Windows versions and by many Windows drivers, so many devices and
older chipsets have no or buggy MSI support. However, when MSIs work,
they are used by most Linux drivers.

display) from a well known online shop I trust and used many times
(bought my current laptop there). There's 6 months warrenty, and my
general impression with ThinkPads is that they have good build quality,
it's the only laptop I would consider buying used. It has firewire so...
Go the netbook route. I'm at a loss here, all these new processors, both
the i-series and the atom (N-series), I have no idea how well they
perform. I tried a few from friends, and they seem fast enough. Anyone
here making music on a netbook? This would most certainly mean I would
have to get a usb soundcard, hmmm :-(

I second the suggestion. zareason OEMs machines that
they've vetted for Linux, they install whatever distro
and release you want, they've got low prices, and they
provide great service.
