I use Audacity to record the sound and save it to a WAV file.
I make a copy, and work on the copy. I use Audacity to break up
the huge WAV file into its various tracks and work on the tracks
individually. That's easier on the CPU and if you screw up its not
such a problem.
There's a useful denoise filter on Audacity I sometimes use, but
most of the real work is done with the Gnome Wave Cleaner. It's free.

The GWC has just about everything I need; noise filters, declickers,
etc. After a track is clean enough, I use Audacity to amplify it to its
maximum below the clipping barrier.
If you're picky like I am, its a long and distressing job. Some records
just can not be cleaned. I only clean records that there are no CDs for.
Otherwise, its not worth the time and aggrivation. Good Luck!

This is a rather easy (and working) solution. I was told that Jamin has a
preset/curve for exactly this. The RIAA equalization is just an equalization
and as long as you do not overload your inputs with the distorted signal of
the turntable, you can equalize the RIAA setting yourself...

keep in mind the RIAA curve requires 60db of filtration (or gain), so if
you try this method record at 24bits and good equipment to maximixe your
dynamic range.

Save yourself some trouble and don't use your average onboard soundcard. At
least take something that's external like a simple usb device or at least a
nice PCI soundcard. I know creative has some USB-cards, don't know: are they
supported? Anyone?
For two reasons: 1. when you record you might get extract unwanted
noise/buzzing. 2. For playback, you might hear something trying to clean up,
but there's really nothing there.
Best do it with headphones or nice speakers, connect you PC to your stereo,
if you've got an OK one.
If you're really cleaning records, not tapes, I think it's wise to use your
cards mic-inputs or use a good phono-amp. Otherwise my bet would be do it as
simple and short as possible. So exclude everything that's not needed, it
might add additional "audio dirt".

Usually, you will need a preamp with built-in equalization. This is why
most hi-fi amplifiers (used to) have a special phono input.

If your home stereo has such a phono input you could connect its
tape-out to the line-in jack of your recording device.

Good catch. I'd forgotten about gwc. I used Gnome Wave Cleaner about 5 years ago to
clean up some very dirty cassette recordings I made 25 years ago. Here's an example of
