Hi,
I haven't switched to linux yet
but it's totally the way of the future,
you people are closer to the zeitgeist than most.
I want to use my laptop for audio
and Agnula DeMudi sounds like the way to go for that
but i've read Debian has quite a learning curve.
I need a user-friendly computer
for other stuff, the usual things and video production,
and also because my computer-knowledge is limited.
So far I've been considering Mandrake but what i've read here
[http://groundstate.ca/mdkaw] says installing the low-latency
patch will compromise networld security, which is something i
will need. Is there any way around this?
Ubuntu Linux [http://www.ubuntulinux.org] is Debian and user
friendly, is there a way to combine Ubuntu with DeMudi?
If the Low-latency kernel from Agnula could be combined with
Ubuntu it could make a great/user-friendly platform for audio
production.
Any advice appreciated

Gah, sorry. That is SOOO out of date. But a few notes...
Most of what's written there should still work fine with the
2.4-multimedia kernel. And netwide security is NOT a big risk for Joe
the Home User.
However, you're probably going to want to use the default Mandrake
kernel, which is now 2.6 based. We include the realtime patch in the
2.6 multimedia kernel. I just haven't had time to update the howto.

Distros are like religion. We all have ours. We don't understand the
others. Hopefully we can coexist peacefully and have some fun
together.
I use PlanetCCRMA (based on FC2) and Gentoo. They are both great for
me. Gentoo has a wonderful library of program available. It has a bit
of a learning curve, but not that bad. The installation scares most
people off. I think the developers rev software too fast, even in the
stable branch, but that's the way it is. It's a religion.
Fedora is a good distro and made much better for music by the Stanford
PlanetCCRMA unit run by Fernando. It's solid and great for music. I
find FC2 a little less intrusive. I sort of forget I'm running and
operating system and just get a little more done using it. That said,
when I want somethign on FC2 that's not music oriented it's much
harder to find and get installed.
I just don't get Debian somehow. I'm missing the gene I guess. It's
probably great also.

I started using Linux for audio stuff because of this very article. I'm
using MDK 10.0 on my audio box and just starting to explore 10.1.
Mandrake is easy to install and has not failed me albeit Linux is a time
consuming medium for audio, at least getting set up anyway. It does
suffer from some bloat. It is well supported by a large community of
users and also current audio rpm's of all the best apps are always
available.

When I was facing the same
question a few weeks ago, one musician
friend of mine recommended DeMuDi, and another one whole-heartedly
approved. I'm new to Debian myself, but with DeMuDi the initial
learning curve wasn't too bad because all the audio stuff I want
is included and works right out of the box. Getting my USB audio
interface to work took a little bit of tinkering, but that was a
matter of configuring the audio software and didn't have anything
to do with Debian per se.

I've got both DeMuDi 1.2 and
Fedora Core 3 on my laptop. I'm using
DeMuDi for audio and FC3 for everything else. They share the /home
partition, so that I can always easily access work I did on either
side. Have you considered installing two distributions, e.g.,
DeMuDi and Mandrake or DeMuDi and Ubuntu?

A/DeMuDi has smoothed out some of the Debian curve. The main difference is
that Debian-based systems tend to use text files in /etc/ for configuration
rather than GUIs. It's possibly the easiest to actually install, but I don't
have much to compare it with. It's the only system I've used and it works for
me. :-) Debian gets fiddly if your hardware needs closed-source drivers.
User-friendliness is such a subjective thing. I dumped Windows for DeMuDi two
years ago and I have not regretted one moment. Frankly, any UNIX-style system
is more user-friendly than WinXP.

I don't know networld. The first workaround is don't connect your box to a
network. A/DeMuDi kernels don't need patching, it's been done for you. AFAIK
there are no security issues apart from the fact that some audio apps need to
run with root privileges (suid), which is a potential security risk. There
isn't really any way round this. I don't think it would make any difference
what system you use.

I wouldn't go any further down that train of thought if you're new to all
this. Do a straightforward install of either:
AGNULA/DeMuDi
Mandrake + Thac's rpms etc.
Fedora + PlanetCCRMA
SuSE is also known to work and uses supposedly user-friendly GUI config tools.
Free, Austin/Thac, Fernando and all the other developers on this list [&c.&c.]
have worked really hard to make multimedia systems that work pretty much 'out
of the box'. Install and use one of these systems for at least a year before
considering any kind of custom approach.

This was true about Debian a few years ago -- at least the installation
aspects. Once you get Debian installed, it can be as user-friendly as
you want based on the software you've installed. I use Debian Sid on all
of my machines, including one I use for graphics/video production and
another one I use in my music studio. I tend to compile all of my stuff
by hand, using bleeding edge CVS builds, but that's probably not the
route you want to go if you are new to the Linux world (and welcome,
BTW, once you get switched -- let's hope you never have to look back!)
Planet CCRMA is another option -- it's RPM/Red Hat based, I believe.
