Hello all,
I'm having trouble finding an audio utility for linux
which can rip individual files using indices on the
CD's not just tracks. I have a large library of audio
CD's I need to rip, and they all use indices as they
all have more than 99 tracks. Can anybody recommend a
tool that can handle these?

Yes, for hours. The problem is that many, many people
use the term "track" and "index" interchangeably when
talking about audio CD's, and this has made the search
process incredibly frustrating.
I've tried searching on "sub-index" as well (even
though that's technically not what they are called),
but I haven't been able to come up with anything.
As I understand it, indices are really just
timeline-based mappings that exist in the disk's menu
table, as opposed to tracks, which exist as actual
physical boundaries in the disk format. Maybe what
I'm looking for doesn't actually exist yet, but I
figure if anyone has solved this problem it's going to
be a linux audiophile.
Anybody have ideas on where else to look/ask??

Nero's site, but although they have plenty of manuals, couldn't find anything
about features. If you or a friend have got a Windows OS, it might be worth
seeing if it is capable of doing what you want. I also see they now have a
Linux version, but you do have to pay for it. If it does work, you could
always see if it will work with wine. Incidentally. 99+ tracks. Man. They
must be really short ones. All the best. Nigel.

Small indeed, yes. It's a large library of SFX for
audio production. We own them outright on CD, but if
we want to aquire individually ripped files (to se up
a searchable database SFX server) we either have to
re-purchase them or rip them ourselves.
Sadly Nero does not appear to support indices. Also,
I'm looking at encoding over 6000 individual sounds,
so I'm really hoping for a linux util that will be
easily scriptable.

Hi;
Im really not sure what you actually want, but
cdparanoia will rip a span defined by any mix of
tracks, time, and sectors. At least according to the
man page...

cdda2wav has index support according to the FAQ. this may be what you need. If
not, perhaps you could add the required functionality.

Hello Andy,
I now understand your problem. I have the Data Becker Monster Sound
Masterbits Sound Library Pack: 8 CDs of WAV samples.
I take it you're trying to builder a sound browser like Data Becker's
so you can locate a particular sound given search parameters and pull
it off the appropriate disc.
Good luck. I'd be interested in any working Linux application you
come up with. I'm still dual booting into Windows NT to pull the
samples off the Data Becker CDs.

Following up on the suggestion I made in an earlier post, from
the cdda2wav
manual page it appears there are two options: one to start extracting from a
specified index and another to list all the indices on the CD. I haven't
looked at all the cdda2wav options in detail, but you may need to use the
listing to obtain offsets into the track and write a script to read the data
between consecutive indices based on these values.
