Hi
I've stated using alsa modular synth, but there's been no traffic on the
list for a couple of days except my single post. Also It seems the
latest version of ams is almost one year old. Is this project dead? Or
it's user base small? Anybody here using it, for example?
If so, maybe someone here can supply me with a working example of the
analogue driver. It doesn't seem to work in any predictable way...

I used it as a jackd client a few months back. With an
Ardour session I duplicated the kick and snare tracks
at certain parts of the production and streamed them
into the "masher" plugin. Definitely cool stuff.
Unfortunately it was very unstable and I couldn't come
up with a recipe that would cause Segfaults. It was
very unpredictable.
If so, maybe someone here can supply me with a
working example of the
analogue driver.
I don't know what the analogue driver is. I use AMS as
a jackd client. I love using synthesis during mix
production but I'm afraid you won't learn much from
me. I'm just a novice.

Actually the more I'm using it the more I get the same feeling. Crashes
quite often, and at unpredictable places...
Maybe I should look for something else...

Currently, the author cannot spend time on ams -
unfortunately.
Yes. it likes to crash, and yes, it takes a lot of CPU. Any
vokunteers ;-) ?
Maybe I should look for something else...

If not dead, it's at least deeply frozen.
I used it briefly, but moved to Om (http://www.nongnu.org/om-synth/).
To me Om is superior in all regards.

Tried to install it, but it seems to need dssi. I then downloaded that

That history remains to be written, but here are some notes towards it:
Almost all the early UNIX-based software sound synthesis languages
were (and many still are) open-source. Such programs include Csound,
cmusic, Common Lisp Music, and most of the other MusicV-derived
languages. In addition, many tools such as Snd, Rt, and MiXViews were
open-source before Linux existed.
During the MIDI boom of the 1980s some DOS music/sound applications
had source code available, though rarely. More typically the authors
would respond to requests for sources, especially after cheap compilers
made it possible for desktop users to build their own binaries (I'm sure
that darned few of them did though). IIRC the RAVEL language included
its source code, and possibly some of the smaller utilities included
sources (or made sources available on request). The Atari seems to have
had a lot of people writing MIDI freeware, its again possible that
sources were available for some of that stuff too. Alas, the Mac ("the
computer for the rest of us", as long as you could afford one) situation
is unknown to me, but given its designed hostility towards hackers I
doubt there's much open-source history there for music and sound
software (I look forward to clarifying responses).
When I started using Linux in the mid-90s I was happy to find a lot
of source code for music/sound apps for SGI hardware. With much
assistance from people like Niccola Bernardini and Richard Kent I was
able to successfully port many of those apps to Linux. These programs
included Mix, Sono, Ceres, and other software from Oyvind Hammer at
NoTAM, the DAP editor by Richard Kent, and MiXViews by Doug Scott. Many
other open-source apps were available for SGI iron, but not all could be
ported to Linux.
I suggest writing to Bill Schottstaedt, Paul Lansky, and John ffitch
for a heads-up on Ye Olde Days. Those fellows are extremely knowledgable
about the early UNIX sound software. Brad Garton, Eric Lyons, and Dave
Topper can give you more info regarding later developments.
You can also reference Curtis Roads' great Computer Music Tutorial,
it's loaded with historical stuff, including some wonderful photos of
ancient gear. The book's a bit pricey, but you might score a good deal
for it on eBay.

My own box is running FC3 for admin/email
and the server is runing an old version of the hat not sure now!!!

Yes, but, for the most part, I don't use the distro supplied audio
packages but build my own from source code (including low-latency kernel)

Yes. There are currently 301 packages in the media-sound category,
not counting different versions of the same package.
c.) do you consider the distribution that you use to

Yes. Most of the stuff I want "just works". The kernels come with
a good set of patches that I haven't had to tweak. (I do have to
configure and build my own kernel, but at least I don't have to patch).
And when occasionally I need to be bleeding-edge, it's trivial to
install a not-yet-stable version of some package. When not even that is
enough, the "emerge inject" command allows me to build software by hand
and tell the package system "don't worry, I've got this one covered".
This is the best mix of stability and bleeding-edge I've found so far.
The drawback is that package installation really does take a lot longer
than any other distro I've tried.

you never used linux from scratch, i see.. :-)
i switched from LFS to gentoo not long ago, i can no longer afford the time
that it takes to install and maintain an LFS box right now.
about gentoo i can't say much about its performance yet or if it's specially
adequate for audio use. but about audio related software i can say that
there are ebuilds for virtually everything you might want to install. and if
you can't find an ebuild for a certain application it's quite easy to write
your own from the templates.
installing the system takes time but is not difficult, and installing
software is very easy indeed.
not that i particularly _like_ gentoo, i used lfs for years precisely
because i never liked _any_ linux distribution. and after using lfs even
less... but as i said i had to compromise, and i think that with gentoo you
can have a reasonable degree of control over your system.

I'm on gentoo-sources 2.6.11-r9 and it's been fine.
I've been running a vanilla 2.6.10 (no genkernel) with the
RT-LSM module loaded which was absolutely OK for my needs
(~16msecs latency on my cheap USB soundcard).
Unfortunately, I trashed this kernel when playing with some
webcams, so I currently run a 2.6.12 without any patches, but
I should build a realtime 2.6.12.
Unfortunately, I'm not that familiar with kernel building, and
since the RT-LSM module got dropped I'm in need on some info
how to build a 2.6.12 for audio work before I can continue
kernel exploring ;-) .

I'm really surprised how many Gentoo users there are.
I used SuSE and Mandrake before. The commercial distros all
have the same disadvantage: Releases.
A Gentoo (or even a Debian based) box can easily kept
up-to-date, and that's an important thing especially when
using audio applications. New versions appear too frequently.

Yep, that's why I use Debian for the base packages like KDE, GTK+,
libsnd, etc., and build all my userspace audio apps from CVS... sure
it's all bleeding edge and stuff doesn't go well from time to time, but
I like to experiment and be the first on my block to have a Linux-based
studio (although I imagine I am the only one on my block to have a
studio of any kind...)

most of what I need are provided with recent versions, I had to build my
own kernel for the 2.6 series to get the best result.

Of course ! I use it because it is easily and highly customizable as the
apps are mostly compiled and then match exactly your hardware.
The genkernel utility is cool if you are a beginner into kernel compilation.
Gentoo has the best stability so far with my USB soundcard, after having
tested the DeMuDi, the AudioSlack and the Planet CCRMA with Fedora core 3.

Of course ! I use it because it is easily and highly

exactly your hardware.
I'd like to add that - before you emerge a package - it is
necessary to set the so called USE-flags properly. Otherwise
it can happen that the application does not behave as
expected - and recompilation is usually a timeconsuming
task ;-) .

Yeah, and if it doesn't I write my own ebuilds or just install the
cvs-versions in my homedir (which isn't needed for a lot of apps thats
for sure!).

As you do everything yourself it is you and only you who decides which
services do run and which settings are made. So you get a very slink
and lean and fast and optimised system.
And as you have to wait for every package to compile, you don't
install many packages just for fun. At least not on your
music-machine...
Altough gentoo is great for everyone willing to learn about linux or
already deeply involved, gentoo isn't a distribution for the
beginners...

Yes. It is geared toward exactly that--customizng Debian for audio and
multimedia purposes. It includes and installs a large quantity of

It serves my own needs very well as a musician and sometime composer,
and has been stable, dependable and loads of fun.

Not really. I'm not up to date with the latest packages, but the
last
time I checked, there were not so many available. Especially
Software-Synthesizers and Programming Languages like CSound or PD are
not available. But it's easy to create your own packages in Arch, so
that's no real problem...

I think others may be more adequate for audio production,
because it
involves quite a bit of work to get everything working. But I really
like the way Arch "ticks", so I never considered switching to another
distro.

Yes. Like CCRMA this distro is intended to be used
for music/audio production. What isn't there I get
from Sarge repositories or build from source.

Yes (see answer to "b"). Real-Time capabilites
are
very good "out of the box" and most apps work reliably
together with little configuration needed on the
user's shoulders... Less time spent tweaking and
configuring the system = more time for actually making

Not a lot, although it's a lot better now than it was a few months ago.
I usually compile audio software from source and build my own RPM
packages using checkinstall when the Mandrake version is too old or
doesn't exist.

I have no idea, I haven't really done any audio production.

Yes, but Gentoo feels more modern than Debian. Debian is
always a bit antiquated, while Gentoo tried to adopt new
technologies as soon as possible. Perfectly fits "trying new
things out" :) .

By the opposite token, this thread is making me consider setting up a gentoo
partition on one of my machines, just to try it out. I'm running pretty
low-end (recycled even) hardware, so compile times may force me to build a
small specific set-up as suggested.
BTW: Debian / DeMuDi for 3 years and counting. Ubuntu is good for general
desktop / client machines, great for newbies, I got fed up with hoary after 2
weeks and decided that a few extra features didn't compare to sarge's broad
based stability. That said, I'm finding Ubuntu very useful for frontline
advocacy so I'm using it on the two client machines at 'work'.
I have now come to the conclusion that all Debian based systems, especially
A/DeMuDi and Ubuntu are now easier to install _and_ configure than Microsoft
Windows XP as well as being much easier and safer to upgrade.
I think that's a neat turnaround. ;]

back to creating a live bootable remastered from Pclos with all the cool
audio apps. Make a great starter Linux Audio CD for someone. It really
is the easiest install I have ever come across.

It's infinitely tweakable, and easily upgraded. I have a personal
preference for Gentoo because it's what I know. Debian also very good,
and as robust as Gentoo.

I think every distribution, once its kernel and packages are well
configured, can be adequate for audio production.
I prefer starting from a Slackware system because of its robustness and
simplicity in tailoring it to your needs, and IMHO it's easier to add,
remove, modify, repackage, test packages... once acquainted with the
absence of dependency checking... :) ,but I must say once you have built
and installed the "base dependencies" (libsndfile, fftw, libsamplerate,
..., etc) it's not that nightmare, if you want to put your hands under
the hood (but if you want you can use "thir party" tools to manage
dependencies, such as swaret or slapt-get...)
I like the "keep it simple" philosophy I feel in Slackware.
But again, I really think every distribution, once its kernel and
packages are well configured, can be adequate for audio production.
Naturally, the more complex it is, the more work has to be done on it,
the more "straightforward for common user" it will be, but this applies
to any distro, IMHO...
I can run ardour/jack reliably with my old sblive at

it's excelent!! I was under macinsto$h world before, using different
"pro" audio tools and since 3/4 years I only works with linux in audio
production, and I could work as "pro" in all the production I want to do.
It's adequate because I could realize all the works I need to do :
recording sounds (jackit, qarecord, jackmix, ardour, rezound, audacity,
mhwaveedit...etc), mixing it (ardour, audacity...etc), masterized it
(jamin, rezound...), produce CD (K3B, Gcombust...), produce webcasting
(icecast, ices, puredata...) & jukebox (zina...), real time concerts &
installation (puredata, jackit, jack-rack, FreqTweak, terminatorX,
spiralSynthModular...)... and it's poilitcal & ethically in the way I
want to work with art (GNU, copyleft, GPL...), it's based on relation
between people and the human being not on business and personnal profit...

Audiopackages in the default install to be "fit" for the US-Market,
where Audiosoftware must be crippled because of the bizarre US-Patent-Law.

I've stated using alsa modular synth, but
there's been no traffic on the
list for a couple of days except my single post. Also It seems the
latest version of ams is almost one year old. Is this project dead? Or
it's user base small? Anybody here using it, for example?
I use it as a central piece of my soundsystem, no fallback to mention
except the fact that I have reach the limit of my old kernel 2.4.28 on my
gentoo box with it. In fact, I had to create additionnal stereo modules,
but it reveals to be unstable. So I have switched to the last preemptive
kernel 2.6.12 and the result is more than correct :)
To have ams working stable with my big patch, I must not move some windows
modules. If I don't tweak ams with the mouse interaction, I can of course

Hmm, interresting. Which version of ams are you running? Are you using
ladspa modules? I just fired ams ud with one of the problematic patches
and I've been jamin away for 10+ minutes without any problem.
My problem is that I mostly use my setup live, so stability and
predictability is *very* important for me...
Is there any ebuild for Om ?

I get strange behaviour with the valve saturation plugin. If I stop
playing ams will east 50% of my cpu. Doesn't happen with other ladspa
modules.

sounds like some denormal problem. Maybe route some noise into it [very
low level]. And contact the author about it.

That is diagnostic of a denormal problem, probably a IIR filter that doesn't
handle the tail of the decay properly.
This effect tends to show up very badly on PIV type chips.
It is a bug, but is a fairly easy fix.

If you can stand the interface, maybe Pd is an alternative? It's
generally rock-solid and has a huge user and developer base.

I looked at it a couple of years ago. IMHO it didn't handle polyphony
very gracefully, as you had to hardcode the number of voices into each
patch. Maybe that has changed?
At that time I was looking for a do-it-all system, and ended up staying
with csound which I knew already. Now I'm trying out the posibility of
using a mixture of softsynths together over jack. So in that light PD
might be useful as a monophonic synth...

Polyphony is still not done automatically as in Csound. Yout have to
do it by hand, but thanks to abstractions and some externals like
"dynext" it's really not hard at all to do polyphonic music. I mean,
otherwise not so many people would use Pd and Max, would they?

Yep, I meant both and additionally some people are put off by Pd
using the old-fashioned Tk toolkit instead of some fancy, themable,
anti-aliased WxGQtk2.
