Hi,
LAC2010 some thoughts:
Great organization and kudos for Marc and others for getting this
conference to The Netherlands. The advantage of having this conference
in a different country each year, is that more different people are able
to join and get enthusiastic.
The disadvantage of having one LAC each year on one continent is that
most people are from Europe, a few from USA. You could think of having
one LAC conference in Europe and one in USA.
I've spoken to a lot of kind, special and smart people on LAC, that was
great.
I've been inspired by art projects like those of Marije and I saw how
interesting the combination of technology, computers and art can be.
The live performances where great. I especially liked the piece of
Fernando.
All the performance where 'experimental music' or livecoding. As
mentioned in the 'future of LAC meeting' I would like to see more Jazz,
Rock etc.
Also most people I met on LAC where developers, I'd like to see more
users and more workshops like the ones from Lieven, Jorn and the
beginners workshop Supercollider from Marije and others.
I agree though that the main goal of LAC should be for developers to
meet and present what they're doing. But once that goal is set firmly,
without discussion, I think there should also be more space and
interesting stuff for users. The mentioned alternatives for users like
Pixel festival and Creative Commons festivals, don't fill in the need
for the average Linux audio rocker imo. They are more aiming on
technology and art or has to little to do with Linux.
Maybe the users (LAU, LinuxMusicians, LinuxMAO etc.) should organize
their own festival and get their place on (or call it around) the
regular LAC to organize workshops and concerts.

The only one I've managed to get to so far was the one in Cologne 2
years ago. I greatly enjoyed it even though I didn't know anyone there,
and had no idea what to expect.
I've been dipping into this years vids. and am delighted that this seems
to go from strength to strength.
I too would like more of an artistic/user content. I think that what
would be absolutely fabulous would be a developer/artist team up,
maybe as some form of competition. I think both would gain a lot of
insight, and the audience would get great performances.

US-only conference. All other Linux related conferences I know of are

Sounds like an interesting idea. I'm just a user and I wanted to
attend the LAC for at least the last two years, but never managed. I do
think it is a bit dev-centric, and I would have gone there mainly to
meet people I only know from the internet thus far.
I agree that it would be nice to have enough stuff that's interesting to
users. At least some of the talks I've seen were really quite technical.

I think everyone noticed the quite big number of presentations done on
OSX and even one on Windows. I don't know about the concerts. I think we
could see it the way Jörn did: those OSX/Windows users are not-yet
converts interested in Linux audio. Personally I attribute it to the
ever-increasing number of cross-platform applications. I would like to
see all presentations on Linux, especially since I don't see what's
missing on Linux to do presentations and since everything presented at a
LAC should run on Linux (else, why is it there?).
Yet a confrontation and interchange with users of other OSes is probably
a good thing. Kind of a reality check, it shows on the one side what's
missing, on the other what's possible already.
Well, I'm already looking forward to next year and hope I'll be able to
attend.

any other laptop they got. Also the inner hardware seems to be good
designed.
All though I have to say that 85% of the people who are happy with their
macbook seems to compare it with cheaper laptops.
So the question is, is it really true what they say? Or are there
laptops out there which can compete with Macbook Pro.

discussions, I can say that
your question is too generally put for any meaningful comparison to take
place. A laptop is an
extremely complex combination of various parts and we really should specify
what means "compete"
here and what parameters we are comparing.

Right. I mean, the main reason I don't like to use any of the current
Apple laptops is that they have a sharp edge along the front and I
keep hurting my wrists on it. There are simply too many possible
factors affecting whether you find something a joy to use or a painful
chore.

First of all, Apple *hardware* is little more than artsy copy-protection for Apple
*software*. It's basically a commodity Intel motherboard in a fancy custom-designed
case.
If it runs Linux, then who cares? What I'd be more disdainful is people running OSX at

Giving a presentation on your Thinkpad with Openoffice is not hard. It's
braver to give a presentation on Windows about using opensource in an
educational setting.
Actually that guy has very few experience with Linux, he asked me if I
could help him with it, which I gladly did.
He also encountered problems on his work with the system admins there.
He is thinking about using only Linux and so giving up his right to get
support from the admins there...

Also.. maybe one could think of 'audio-music-oriented' linux install
fests specifically for mac users especially the ones who may be
themselfes pissed off by Apple's attitude as someone mentioned.

Some say: Steve Jobs is a Clone of Bill Gates minus the charity....
So give the appropriate compliments: Mac is perfectly qualified to be
called completely evil. Even though MacOSX is a very good working,
powerful UNIX(with a crude GUI though...), I would be even less offended
to see someone do a presentation for a Linux-Event on MSWindows

I think it is not a matter of people exchanging philosophical principles. It
is a matter of practical use - if people who are doing Linux apps are not
primary users of those apps, then those apps will never "get there". Only if
you use 100% Linux software will you be able to understand what is lacking.
And the unfortunate situation I am seeing is that people who are developing
really good apps for Linux use Windows or Mac software to do their music.
Which is sort of upsetting since it basically means that they are not that
passionate about getting things they need into Linux - at any time for THEIR
needs they just go to Windows.

I have no problem with MacBooks, as long as they are running Linux. Why in the world would

I don't think anyone can top that guy (was it last year) who did his demo with
linux, but fired up windows beforehand to use acrobat for the presentation. And
he explained that there where no good presentation programs for linux...

I'd like to add my own 2¢ by copy-pasting my post concerning LAC2010 on
the LinuxMusicians forum (with some slight differences for the sake of
clarity):
I had a great time listening to all the devs of the software I use and
like so much. Isn't it amazing to go to a conference where major
developers and end-users are attending workshops and presentations together?
I especially liked the Ambisonics workshop of Jörn Nettingsmeier, which
he actually did kind of together with Fons Adriaensen, and the
presentation of Fernando Lopez-Lezcano on the OpenMixer set-up at
Stanton University. And the meeting on the future of LAC, Malte Steiner
criticizing Apple, Jörn Nettingsmeier building bridges and reconsidering

Yeah, I had a great weekend. Learned a lot, but I also learned that I
already know so much about all Linux audio related stuff, both on the
technical and the practical side. I wanted to do a presentation this
year but because I'm about to become a dad I didn't contribute anything.
Maybe next year, but it depends where LAC2011 will be held. Probably in
Europe again, possible candidates that were mentioned were Graz, Paris,
Lyon and Parma. I'd like to do a presentation on the practical use of
Linux audio software, but not like Lieven Moors did it. That was an
overview of the possibilities and I want to focus on how to use these
possibilities in a music production.
The organisation also mentioned engaging communities like
LinuxMusicians. They would like to see and hear more music, products and
concerts actually made with Linux. That part was now too much filled in
with stuff made on Macs. And they really want to hear something else
than electro-acoustic music, but more poprock and dance orientated stuff.
There were some drawbacks of course, first of all the Mac controversy as
pointed out by Malte Steiner and second, unsurprisingly for me, the
little number of end-users attending the conference, especially the
Dutch ones. I've asked rosea.grammostola about it and we both agreed
that there are like 5 people actively working with Linux audio over
here. So it's all about awareness (quoting Malte Steiner again), we
should work on that, getting more people to know and like making music
with Linux. Next year I don't want to be the only one that's dragging
around his mobile gear, next year I want to do something with it!

1) My respect for the FLOSS developers has been increased and I see the
benefits of open source software, especially for arts, more and more.

Conference, so kernel, distro, driver and desktop people find out which
problems the pro audio people are facing and what is important for them.
This could improve the out-of-the-box-experience for pro audio people.

I do so for some years now. speaking to the mainline-Linux-people in
Germany at LinuxTag, Chemnitzer Linuxtage, Brandenburger Linux Info Tag
and so on.
I find a mild interest but not so much in-deep understanding and many
misconceptions.
Such as:
The main problem in Linux Audio is, that you cannot hear your MP3-player
anymore if you try to play a game.
Audio software is not the same as demanding in terms of performance as
data-bases are.
Most audio software is buggy for it can freeze the system. No good
software will ever freeze or crash.
Jack is yet another sound-server like artsd or esd, it is only more
complicated to set up and operate for the user. It should work
transparently.
....
I gave a talk on the Linux audio system at the Chemnitzer Linuxtage this
year in wich I proposed:
Make your software run with jack if you plan to make a productive audio
tool. Make it run with ALSA also and if its just for the desktop, make
it run with Pulse Audio. If this seems too hard a task, try phonon or
xine but ignore all others. We need to get rid of all the obsolete
legacy stuff out there.
In the discussion after the talk came questions like this one:
"OSS is free now and it might be cool - why not code audio-stuff for OSS4?"
The audience ratings for the talk where mostly positive, the only
criticism was: "I found it too controversal/apodictic".

I found Lennarts talk to be mostly about justifying his work on PA, but
this was one good point. We should try to become more visible in general
and especially for people who develop infrastructure.
I was very glad to see the very informative talk of John Kacur about the
rt kernel and also that he talked with devs about low level issues.
It's simply good to see that a kernel developer and especially a
preempt_rt developer takes interest in Linux audio.
