Hi all,
New LAU member here. I'm having a problem with terminatorX 3.81 on my Red
hat 8.0 box and Alex (tX author) has suggested upgrading GTK2 to the latest
available version. I've downloaded gtk2, gtk2-devel and gtk-engines from Red
hat's website - but the dependencies are driving me crazy. Does anyone know
a good apt repository with up to date GTK2 packages?

Not the answer you want to hear, but Mandrake comes with terminatorX,
and automatic dependency resolution. ;-)
I assume the same is true for debian.

Talking about Mandrake. After having postponed my testdrive of Mandrake as DAW
a couple of weeks ago in the wait for 9.2, You told me that 9.2 wuld come
with ardour, but as far as I can see they are only in contrib (and ardour is
there also in beta 3 whlie I can see that Thac has released a 9.1 rpm of
beta5) Is this what you meant that it was a part of contrib, or is there
another reposotory somewhere?

The contrib stuff in Mandrake is pretty well integrated using urpmi
set to an appropriate mirror. As for a distro supporting Ardour as
part of a commercial package, I don't think any of them are doing
that yet.

SuSE included it on the 8.1 CDs but then dropped it again from 8.2.
SuSE tend to bundle a lot of stuff, much of which doesn't really

Personally, I'd rather have a distro on 1 CD of well tested and
integrated stuff than 7 CD's of random binaries. Quality, not
quantity is the key, because we're basically up against OS X and
Windows XP, and you get very little extra software as standard with
those OS's. So it's easy for a Linux distro to look untested and
poorly integrated by comparison.
At the time of SuSE 8.1, I think Paul Davis was specifically asking
people not to distribute binaries, which is fair enough.

My experience with SuSE 8.1 is that it does a good job at installing and
usually delivers what it claims. It's just that the apps tend to be old
versions. And it funny that You mentioned Ardour because it's the only
one (that comes to mind) that I remember having problems installing.
That doesn't mean that there hasn't been problems with how well the apps
are that are included with SuSE 8.1, it just means that I can't (recall)
having problems with installing or running any other apps. Actually, I
find that the dependencies and installations are pretty good. Like I
said, the only thing I can say bad is how old some of the apps are
though. But all that is needed to run the programs are there and do
(tend) to install without a hitch. At least they do with SuSE 8.1.

Yes, all the good audio stuff is in contrib. I'm sure I pointed that
out in the HowTo. Beta3 was the latest version when 9.2 development was
frozen, so that's what went in. Thac's RPM of beta5 should work fine,
although I don't think there's much difference between the two
versions. I think we'll all be a lot happier when ardour 1.0 is
released.

For now, add this to your .bashrc:
alias ladccad='ladccad -d /home/ketil/audio-projects'
and you will not have the problem anymore.
I have fixed this in future rpms.
