A. Blatter's "Instrumentation And Orchestration" is my favorite. He
indicates the normal ranges for each instrument, further dividing the
representation into the expected ranges for high-school, collegiate, and
professional players. IMO a much more useful reference book than
Piston's (though I recommend Piston's Harmony to my students).
