Hi,
I know that there are tons of questions regarding to which laptop to buy,
compatability...etc. so, 'sorry to add up but,
I almost made my mind to buy a Lenovo laptop (G580 i7-3529M/8G/500GB), as
there are too many models and I don't want to spend all my time to
research...
It's sold 699 euros here in Germany and the spec seems to be decent enough.
(Honestly, for my music, it's 'too much'...but I also do some 3D, postprod
things...)
But only one thing that bothers me, is that on the website, they say its
mic/headphone connection availability will depend on 'software settings'...

what the hell do they mean by 'software settings'???
It might sound a bit strange for most of you but...
I do not own external soundcard and I'm not planning to. I don't like the
'warmness' of most of the soundcard produces (because of its preamps, I
guess) and it's easier to produce glitch sound on onborad 'shit' sound
card. and even if I'll buy a external dsp card one day in order to have
more in/outputs, I still want to have this quick and dirty option of
onboard soundcard...you know what I mean..;)
so, it'll be a disaster if I can't use built-in headphone/mic connections...
Do you guys have any idea what they mean by, 'software setting'??
Do any of you own a lenovo laptop of this kind and had any issues with
onboard soundcard, and some evil fucking windows configuration software
concerning mic/headphone connection?
I do own a old lenovo thinkpad and I never had any problem with onboard
connections. I didn't need to configure anytthing, jack/alsa,
straight-forward...but it's old T61 model and I assume that now it's a
whole different biz...
finally, if ever, some of you think that it's totally stupid decision to
spend 700 euros on this machine, and you have better idea on what to buy,
I'll be always thankful to your advices!!!

Supercollider 3.4 (thinking on upgrading to 3.6 when new machine comes)
Audacity
Blender
Sonic Visualizer
FFMpeg
Ubuntu 10.10 but I'll upgrade to 64bit 12.04 LTS when new machine comes.

hmmm...interesting.
so that means there's a risk that this 'jack sensing' can be a trouble
maker.
if I use any version of Linux that has any kinda issue with onboard
soundcard so that I can't control 'jack sensing' stuff.
then when I plug in my headphone, the soundcard will act like there's
nothing plugged in?
do you think this kind of worst scenario is possible?

not sure about software settings, but from the English Lenovo site it looks
like it has a combo jack, which combines the mic and headphone into a
single jack. A quick search shows quite a few people have problems with
combo jacks and external microphones. You don't really say if you need the
input side to work, so if you are just using the output you are probably
safe. There seem to be reports of sound output working under 12.10 and
12.04.

although they say it's not combo ((These connections can be used depending on
the software setting): 1 x Microphone, 1 x Headphone), on the picture of
the same website I see only one jack 'hole'.
so, maybe the 'software setting' means exactly that.
funny, because on the other models which has combo jack, they just say it's
combo jack.
anyway, good point. I won't buy anything with combo!!! (except hamburgers)

shit, I was happy to find this model. it looked pretty decent 'combo' of
price/spec. (i7/8G for under 700 euros, I couldn't find much...)
but it's gone now.

I have a combo jack on my T430, and have not experienced any problems
using it with a headphone with a usual 3 pin jack + the internal laptop
microphone.

my T520 (combo jack) works fine with headphones. i've never tried plugging a mic into
that jack, but the internal mics work fine. i always use an external interface for
recording anyways...
i'm on Crunchbang (Debian).

You'll definitely want an external audio interface, an inexpensive one
should be fine, but you can ramp up as to your needs. The audio
chips used in the Thinkpads have always been pretty low quality, I think
you'll be pleasantly surprised at how much better the sound is with an
external interface.

type of Lenovo laptop I want to buy. (it's not thinkpad series. it's G

and as I'll already spend 700-900 euros on new lap top, the cheapest option
will be better.
I need one mic input and a stereo output. (although more outputs can be
always welcome, if it doesn't double up the price)
I don't need super hyper fantastic quality. just 'normal'.
cheap and work out of box with the most recent laptop + ubuntu set up would
be more important than quality...
but one good bonus will be headphone amp + on board headphone volume
control. I spend a lot of time with my Beyerdynamic DT-770.
and the reason why I insist on Lenovo models is simply I never had any
other brand...before my first PC laptop, I was brainwashed by mac. so I
have no idea about general PC stuff.
so plz don't hesitate if you can recommend a decent laptop from other brand.

Not a recommendation, just brainstorming.

i picked up a lenovo thinkpad t430s in late december and it's an awesome
machine. the current generation of lenovos seem pretty good. running
arch on it, everything worked out of the box.
i also picked up a focusrite scarlett 2i2 interface, which is fantastic
and also worked out of the box. however, i note that you're looking for
"cheap", and the scarlett is unfortunately about 140eur.
in terms of cheap audio interfaces, i'd honestly go for a used native
instruments USB interface. they're fully supported and you can get
absurdly low latencies with them. i have an audio4 dj i use for DJing
(with xwax) in addition to the scarlett i use for everything else.

Before you give up on the Lenovo, I'd like to mention that I
have a Thinkpad, T410, with a single audio connector.
It can take a regular 1/8" connector for stereo
headphones, but can also take a special pin
with four conductors instead of three.
There are headsets using this single connector for mic and
audio.
I put in a splitter, and was able to get sound
from a microphone, and output sound in the headphones.
The audio chipset, according to lspci, is as follows:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series
Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 06)

Hi,
My son has a T430, and a headphone set with a built-in microphone. This
uses the 4-connector 1/8-inch jack. I believe that he uses it for
teleconferencing, listening and speaking. I think that is at least one
of the use-cases intended for the combo jack. He runs Fedora18. You
might ask a Lenovo representative if this is the way the plug should
work. They sold the T430 to him with SuSE installed on it, so they
should not be too offended if you ask about Linux support. You are a
prospective sales opportunity to them, after all.

I first ran into this on a Macbook Pro. I was NOT happy with that state
of affairs. The combo in/out jack is an abomination unto the $deity, I
tells ya. I'm saddened to find it on a Lenovo - I'm on my fifth
Thinkpad (currently a T400) and have always found them durable and reliable
(though this is the only non-IBM branded one I've had).
I would never use the onboard audio in for anything of importance, though,
since it's always been a low quality one, so I might not mind; I don't
think I've ever used the input jack on this. Your use may vary.

Ubuntu 10.10 but I'll upgrade to 64bit 12.04 LTS when new machine comes.
Debian is deprecating ffmpeg in favour of libav-tools, and since Ubuntu
is based on Debian, I presume you will face this issue at some stage.
I'm now using avconv without any issues.
