Hi,
I've run into problems with my audiophile 2496 where
the mpu401 hardware design doesn't support TX
interupts so when spinlocks occur it causes complete
system lockup. Power reset required.
My primary midi concern is i/o for mmc and mtc.
Questions
1. I've got a midiman usb 8x8, has anyone gotten this
to work with the firmware from the Linux Hotplug? I
think this work was done by Clemens Ladisch.
2. If I can get the 8x8 working, this would eliminate
the need for an audiocard that has midi i/o. Right?
3. Is anyone using active usb extension cables? We've
gotta run about 50 ft. Anyone see a problem with that?
Well, question 2 seems obvious but better to be safe.

This bug has now been completely fixed. You can get the latest MPU-401
driver from the CVS, or I can send you the files.

The GPL firmware on linux-hotplug.sourceforge.net was written by Lars
Dölle, and it supports 1x1 and 2x2 devices only. For the 8x8, you

Yes. (And nothing prevents you from using both.)

Hi Clemens,
Thanks much for the fixes and your reply. I'll 'cvs
update' alsa for the fixed ice1712. When I've got
time, I'll apply your patches and try the usb
midisport 8x8.
Do you see any advantage to using a pci card or usb;
is interupt overhead lower in one or the other, etc,
etc,?
My system is almost exclusively jack and its clients
so the kernel is patched for lowlatency, preemption
and capabilities.

kernel usb module choice of ohci for AMD vs uhci for
Intel. We thought it might be worth mentioning in the
README.
Something we've noticed is that aconnect is seeing
ports 0 -> 8. Of course that would appear to be nine
i/o ports. Is that correct?

USB has a latency of 1ms due to the frame-based
communications, the
latency on the PCI bus is certainly lower.

Yes, I'm going to write a troubleshooting guide where this (and
hotplug-related issues) will be discussed.

Hi,
I thought it'd worth following this up by letting
everyone know that the 8x8 is setup, working and being
used to route mmc and mtc messages.
Linux Environment
I'm running jack and ardour with an external digital
mixer. The mixer is sending mmc transport instructions
to ardour and ardour returns mtc which keeps the
transports synchronized. MMC bindings between the
mixer channel faders and ardour mixer strips is
working.
The next addition to my environment will probably be
MUSE because I believe it has some midi sync
capabilities. I hope to MUSE:MIDI-clock_out ->
external hardware sequencer/sampler. I probably won't
get around to this for a couple weeks.
Patrick, if you write a howto for installing the
hotplug and usb firmware perhaps we should include
information for configuring the setup that I've got.
I'd be happy to help at your request. I have a sense
that we could get Clemens to help explain my
configuration. :)
