Hi.
Does anyone know a tool to extract the (mono i guess) audio track from
an avi-file? A cmd-line tool would be fine as well.

i forget about something: I'm looking for such a tool to AVOID recording
the output with an audio recorder :)

hallo, also not a command line, but mhwaveedit does this in very elegant
way - just go 'open file', navigate to the .avi file and press 'ok'.
that's it.
mhwedit does this with most other video formats too.

Lots of things will do it. If you'd like a graphical tool, try
avidemux. If you want something a little quicker that you can use in
a script, here you go:
mplayer -vo null -ao pcm:file=myvideo.wav myvideo.avi

Mplayer/mencoder can probably handle this:

A DV editor like Kino (although not command-line) can also split out
the audio stream from the video and allow you to extract the audio to
a separate file.

Hi!
Take mplayer:
mplayer -ao pcm:file=out.wav in.avi
Works fine, generate a .wav-file in the sampling-rate (and I believe number
of channels) of the input.
There's also an option to skip the wav-header and just produce a raw audio
file. Search the man for "noheader".

With mplayers -dumpaudio option you can extract the track without
decoding it. It writes to a file called stream.dump by default.
Although, if you want to do anything with it you'll have to decode it
anyway, so what the rest suggested is probably more practical in most
situations.
