Hi Fons, list,
Building zita-dpl1 on Debian, as there is no Debian package available,
and it failed with
/usr/include/X11/Xft/Xft.h:39:10: fatal error: ft2build.h: No such file or directory
similar to this Debian package bug

Had to change the line
zita-dpl1: CPPFLAGS += $(shell pkgconf --cflags freetype2)
to
zita-dpl1: CPPFLAGS += $(shell pkg-config --cflags xft)
in the Makefile to make it work. Thought I'd report this here.

to
zita-dpl1: CPPFLAGS += $(shell pkg-config --cflags xft)
...
For the record, there is a "pkgconf", see:
https://git.sr.ht/~kaniini/pkgconf
and there is a debian package for it as well as pkg-config:
$ apt-cache show pkgconf |head -3
Package: pkgconf
Version: 1.6.0-1
Installed-Size: 300
$ apt-cache show pkg-config |head -3
Package: pkg-config
Version: 0.29-6
Installed-Size: 203
So you don't have to patch the makefile, just update your build
dependencies.

Oh forgive me, the change is
about replacing freetype2 with
xft (not switching between the older pkg-config and pkgconf).
Had to change the line
zita-dpl1: CPPFLAGS += $(shell pkgconf --cflags freetype2)
to
zita-dpl1: CPPFLAGS += $(shell pkg-config --cflags xft)
...

Here (Archlinux) the --cflags for xft and freetype2 are
identical.
