something like:
playlist-creator directory -o directory.m3u
m3u is just a list of files so ls or find should work, e.g.:
find directory -name '*.mp3' > directory.m3u

As far as I remember the m3u-format its as simple as:
for file in directory/*; do echo $file >> directory.m3u; done
Or maybe even some piping of ls output is possible too. There you could also
set it to only list files newer then the creation of an given m3u to only add
the new files.

A trivial exercise in bash, or the shell of your choice. I did
something very similar when I originally ripped all of my CDs and popped
them onto my intranet server:
ls *.mp3 |sort > playlist.m3u
Obviously this only works if you are in the directory, but it would take
very little work to expand the bash script to work as you want it.
The sort is in there because I named all the tracks along the lines of:
nn-xxxx.mp3
...where nn is the album sequence and xxxx is the title.
If I wanted anything more sophisticated, I'd knock something together in
Perl - which I did to create the HTML page that listed all the albums
(all in their own directories) with play links that went to the playlists.

If you use Debian, it's currently in testing (Lenny) and unstable. If you
use Ku/Edu/Ubuntu, it's in the Intreped 'universe' repositories (maybe
others, too).

Now that I know that the playlist is just a list of files, this is
all fairly easy, if kept simple. My confusion stemmed from looking
at the .m3u files generated elsewhere which contained a bunch of
extras besides just the file locations.
So, what's the difference between a .m3u playlist and a .pls playlist?

Hi!
From what I've seen of .pls-files they can have a bit more structure or
other information. I think mplayer understands both. But .m3u is more
universal, due to its simplicity I believe.
Other info in .m3u-files: I've often seen something like:
*** CUT ***
#EXTINF,-1,Radio station one
http://radiostation.one.org:8001
*** CUT ***
This can be helpful to some systems. I have installed slimserver, some
network broadcasting software meant to work with some hardware, but also with
software, which uses this info to display in a web-interface/hardware device
display.
