FM synthesis is capable of rather cheesy Rhodes sounds. You could use

You betcha. We used the Rhodes in my much younger days, it was about the
only alternative to dragging around an upright to mic.
And I must protest Frank B's characterization of FM's "cheezy" Rhodes
sound ! ;-) My TX802 makes a better Rhodes sound than the original, and
the virtual tines never break.
Seriously though, the quality of FM's Rhodes emulation certainly depends
on the FM implementation. It's pretty bad from my OPL3 soundchip but
it's gorgeous from my 802.
Some of the SF2 Rhodes fonts are nice, and I'm pretty sure some of the
Linux softsynths can make good Rhodes sounds. I'm also curious to hear
how Steven Yi's DX emulation will sound in his "blue" Csound software.

The Rhodes electric piano, to me, supports my theory that musical
tastes, whether they be in tunings or timbres, are based as much in
culture and history as they are in physics. I'm not saying this to be
funny (although reminiscing about the Rhodes _is_ funny).
As a high-schooler in the jazz ensemble and wanting to play out
elsewhere, I found myself in need of an electric piano (this was before
good piano synths, around 1978). I went with my dad to look at a used
one. I played it, and for a Fender Rhodes, it seemed to my ears to be in
perfect condition. But dad, having never heard a Rhodes, thought the
sound was horrible!
Something interesting about the Rhodes electric piano, I found, was that
I played it quite differently from the way I would play an accoustic
piano. The expressive character of the Rhodes was concentrated in the
low-middle register, where you get that characteristic grunge; unlike a
good piano where you could sound beautifull all over the range. When
playing jazz, this led me to a quite different style of playing when I
was on the Rhodes, instead of an accoustic piano. When playing jazz
ballads on the Rhodes, I would always put the weight in the left hand,
and be more likely to create secondary melodic lines (or well, just
passing tones) in the left-hand harmonization.

Yup, just be carefull venturing more than an octave above middle C.
That's where you get into "light jazz" territory and you have to know
what you're doing there. Then again Chic Corea never had a problem
there, but I'm quite sure he knew what he was doing.

the DX7 is one of the most famous FM sounds, and it even has been
overused. The STK FM examples don't emulate the DX7 but the TX81Z,
which might be similar to your synth. It uses only 4 operators instead
of the 6 in a DX7, but that's okay.
I recently had a lot of fun with them and the BeeThree when I was
looking for a short term birthday present.
I can't play the keyboard, so I downloaded a whole bunch of pop tunes
in midi format from midifarm.com and other sites, you know, real
"cheezy" stuff like "Mandy" or Pink's "Let's get this
party started"
and "arranged" these to use BeeThree instances with oodles of vibrato
for just about every voice except the drums, which I did with my
"angriff" Pd-drumset.
The result was absolutly hilarious IMO, very charming and amusing, and
the lenghth of a CD was quickly filled.
I was so impressed by my achievement, that I even re-used it for a
couple of next birthdays. ;)

thimble but I did stumble across a thing at the SLAB website called
Bristol that had a Hammond B3 sound.

I've been trying to get it going for a few hours now. I have used all

i was just reading through lau seeing if anyone got the bristol synth running and i saw
your post frank. If you do any more remixes like that, i think its only fair that you
post some oggs. ;)
I always meant to do some joke remixes of christmas carols. I think your heavily
vibrato'd hammond could be pretty good for this. You'd need a heavy beat on it too
though.

Patrick, somewere on my backup CDs I have a very good soundfont of a
fender rhodes (sampled from real instrument) it's about 4Mb and I have
to find it (this may take a couple of days) , so tell me if I can send
it to you directly.

Anyone know how I can emulate a rhodes using the
computer keyboard?
A mix I'm working on really needs some hearty organ.
Patrick, somewere on my backup CDs I have a very good soundfont of a
fender rhodes (sampled from real instrument) it's about 4Mb and I have
to find it (this may take a couple of days) , so tell me if I can send
it to you directly.

This soundfont has been made by me some year ago; sound are sampled
from a real rhodes by a friend of mine who has a music store here
in Bologna, Italy

Mmmmhh, I get the same error with wget... md5 is
7f0b713f64ddd8c8fccfcfe9db74af6c if I stop it before he tries to
reconnect. In effect the size is 4244967.
Probably is a web.archive.org problem; the first time I downloaded
with mozilla so I didn't see errors...
but downloading again with mozilla gives me the same md5 so I suppose
this is the correct one. It works with timidity...
When I get home I try to find the cdrom copy (not a simple task ;-)).

I have added it to the timidity config file and now I get a detuned
rhodes in the vkeybd patch selector. Is that the same one? I have no
idea whether vkeybd is reading from the timidity patch set or not.

Oopps, forget about this file, it was corrupted on that site. I
finally found it on my backups and it differs for 1 byte.

Regarding timidity, I guess (but I may be wrong) that it has the
limitation of being able to load only one sf2 at a time, and mine IIRC
does not contain the preset "detuned rhodes" (should have 5 presets)
Now I send it to Matthew or Alexandre, in the hope that they put it in
some web site for public access.

You need to use the program sftovkb to generate a patch list for vkeybd.
Try this in the root of your home directory, eg /home/emillo/
sftovkb rhodes.sf2 > vkeybd.list
You should now see the correct presets if you restart vkeybd. Vketbd is an
amazing program in the best tradition - simple to use, yet does exactly what
you need.
Now I send it to Matthew or Alexandre, in the hope
that they put it in
some web site for public access.
I'll give the soundfont a go - thanks. As for the licence, be careful. Perhaps
the readme should make clear that the copyright holder who has released this
soundfont is only claiming copyright on the recording, not the creation of
the sound. You can't release something under the GPL if it actually belongs
to someone else who isn't happy to do so. By asserting copyright on the
recording, you are saying that it isn't simply a copy of someone else's
Rhodes soundfont.
I bet there is a company somewhere which claims to own the Rhodes sound as
'intellectual property', independent of your friend's sampling of it. It's
such a well known sound, and I bet there are proprietary soundfonts based on
it.

/usr/share/vkeybd/vkeybd.list.

you can create a patch list via sftovkb program. save it as
~/.vkeybd.list, so that vkeybd will read at the next time.
% sftovkb rhodes.sf2 > ~/.vkeybd.list
