Anyone knows an application (for Linux) that can take the sound of a
single instrument (or voice, or anything that's simple - not complex
sounds) as an input, and transform it into notes (or a MIDI file)?
Essentially, it's what a musician with perfect pitch does - upon hearing
a melody, start playing it on an instrument.
Or, if you wish, the reverse of a softsynth: from WAV to MIDI.
I'm pretty sure i've seen something like that advertised somewhere
("Sound On Sound"? "Keyboard Magazine"?), and i'm pretty sure
it's not
for Linux, so i wonder if there's something similar on Linux.

Have a look at tuner apps, they basically do what you want. For more complex signals for
helping to figure out chords, etc, more sophisticated methods must be used. Like fourier
transforming the signal for hints what notes might be ringing..

I agree with Larry's general point here. "perfect" pitch isn't so useful
as
relative pitching. An absolute pitch without context isn't strictly speaking
musical information. It also generally assumes that "middle" A = 440Hz and
equal temperament are somehow "right" and good, I find it somewhat
discordant. The important point is that you would need some sort of pitch and
timbre reference in order to make sense of the incoming information.
My first thought would be to see what pd can do, but I'm very much a beginner
with it.

person with perfect pitch would go nuts there, because the sound of

Actually no. I have perfect pitch, and know two others who do also. We
don't think that, mainly because the beach has so many harmonics and
overtones etc that it is impossible to tell what key it is in.
However, given the sound of a washing machine, elevator, etc we could
easily work out the constant pitch of those devices.

A voice tutor I knew said the same, and would regularly have problems
when the pianos in practice rooms were drifting off tune.
Surely though, even 'perfect' pitch is relative, since if the scale were
constructed diferently the relevant notes would change their absolute
frequency. It's just that a person with perfect pitch is able to
compare the perceived note to a remembered absolute, whereas with
relative pitch a person needs to be 'tuned' first.

I remember it saying that you can (for instance) sing into a mic and the
notes would be imputted into a midi file.
