I just think it's much easier for developers and users to fix the
mainline distro so these tweaks are no longer needed than to create
a
new project.

But what if "fixing" the mainline distro degrades the performance for
things other than multimedia?
One would hope a patch that configures one thing at the expense of breaking another would
not get commited into a stable release. I would expect this for a distro with decent QA.
