Hey everyone!
I have created a YouTube channel where I am creating playlists of ambient
music. As many of you have told me that they enjoy listening to "droning"
and other of my ambient creations during work, I have created "Music for
programming" mixes.
Some of them might feature just one tune, some feature several tunes.

It's an interesting mixing angle. For ambient music my first jest
would be to mix as "usual", with approx. -1 dB headroom at the
"mastering" stage. Skip the "mastering" stage if it's all done in
a
single DAW session, but the goal is the same. But then I would
consider that it is ambient and shouldn't be pushed like that, which is
probably wrong regarding other sounds and musics experienced by the
listener.
Keeping space within ambient music while "pushing" it somewhat...

The problem here is that a lot of this music is essentially quiet by
design. Amplifying it does not work well every time.
Starting droning 140, the level of tunes generally goes up. Music for
programming vol 1 features a lot of older tracks. I think I did amplify
them a bit, but probably not too much.

Indeed. Hence the interesting part in such mixes. If I go by Michael
White's recent Loudness class which I've started, the concept is to
give ample space to the instruments which makes them breathe in their
own range. This leeway created around the instruments then serves as
padding when "raising the volume" later. With beat music we can see
it as instruments are chopping here and there. Now with ambient music,
or any music that combines spacey sounds (and I use some), in which
instruments blends into each other, the interesting part comes in
trying to keep some space so that these will not sound mushy or glued
together later at the loudness stage.
