Ive been wanting to record the output of firefox(flash of some sort).
I followed http://jackaudio.org/routing_alsa
and connected the firefox output into audacity.
It works but the original firefox sound is much louder and clearer than the
recording even when done at full volume.
So two questions
1. Is it possible to capture the pcm data that jack is sending into a file
and then to convert that file (sox??) to wav.
I tried arecord and audacity -- they were both similar
2. Any better/more proper way to do this?

Hi Rustom!
Isn't there a file output plugin for ALSA, which you could configure? It
wouldn't be the easiest and most readily available solution, but it should
work. I think, the output of that plugin would be either .wav or .raw, which
you can most certainly convert with the sndfile programs or sox.
But I don't understand, why you would get lower volume, when routing alsa to
jack and then recording. I've used ALSA's jack plugin a few times and it
souned all very well.

Why not just normalize the wave once you have it in audacity??

Why not just normalize the wave once you have it in audacity??
From that I get that there is significant 'DC
offset'.
What that is (I think) I understand.

How much softer? If its a small amount, normalizing the audio (Al
Thompson's suggestion) would be perfect. If the audio is practically not
visible in Audacity, and you normalize it you're going to get a whole lot
of quantization noise

If you have flash volume up the whole way, ALSA up the whole way, and then
record using JACK directly into Audacity, there is no reason for the
recorded stuff to be any quieter.
I've used this approach before, and it works flawlessly, just check your
