This is the first time posting to the mailing list, I appreciate any help that is given. I
have a 2 soundcard configuration: An SB live and Gina from Echo audio. The Gina only
provides audio, which is the main card I wish to use for routing my audio signals. The
other card is an SB live intended for using the midi interface (MPU 401 or something to
that effect), and to load a soundfont into the cards internal synthesizer. My question is,
how do I use the SB live's soundfont synthesizer capabilities and route it to the Gina
for audio playback. I'm using Jack and do not know how to do this. I'm wondering
if it is even possible. I do not want to use the SB live's audio output jack just to
hear the soundfont I loaded. I would like the Gina to handle all audio connections. Thank
you again and I appreciate any help with this issue. Let me know if more information is
needed.

Connecting via S/PDIF should be the easiest way if the two cards
allow such connections and signal routing.
Alternatively, it may be possible to use the SB's mixer controls to
route the synth output to the SB's digital "capture" stream and use
that as a second input device within Jack. You will get extra latency
on the synth output so for live playing this is not ideal at all.
Or you could use a software synth instead: the first thing I would try
in your place.

I doubt that using a sound card as soundfont player in combination with
a second sound card for audio is a good I idea. I would do the same as
Tim. Take a look at fluidsynth, fluidsynth-dssi and qsynth.

Uhm... IIRC, Live! and later stream samples from host RAM using DMA.
(That's how they support multi-open on the audio API side as well.) I
think AWE64 was the last card I used that had on-board waveform memory
- and I'm not even sure about that. I definitely remember adding a
pair of SIMM modules to my AWE32 card, though. :-)
But either way, I don't quite see the point in using a hardware
sampleplayer these days either.

card (not all chips support the full 32-bit PCI address range, and
nowadays 4 GB isn't even the full range).
