Just found out about clyp.it, a straightforward no frills place to put
audio clips. Don't even need to create an account.
I tried it with a short improvisation:

Soundcloud is:

other content, data or information that you upload, store, transmit,
submit, exchange or make available to or via the Platform (hereinafter
"Your Content") is generated, owned and controlled solely by you, and
not by SoundCloud."
The usefulness of clyp.it would then be to put short snippets. As it
is possible to see, many people who actually have accounts on clyp.it
put short clips there while having a link to their Soundcloud account
for more. For this purpose it is another way to expose (snippets
of) music. If people like the style, they click on the Soundcloud link.
Others put interviews, talks, etc...

Actually, if you read the Grant of Licence section, it appears very
similar. Most content sharing sites have similar terms or they couldn't
function. I do like that SoundCloud is a bit more explicit why, and appears
to be revokable.

why, and appears to be revokable.
It is more detailed indeed. Options can be set by the user to cover
some aspects. I guess it would be possible to make pieces non-public
and share the link(s) through various forums and such.
I wonder how many people actually stumble across inadvertently on
pieces of music put on Soundcloud. Apart from the ones scanning for
new arrivals and immediately sending you offers for larger
distribution. "I like your piece very much... blah blah." But wait,
the piece is 8 minutes long and you send me that within one minute of
the posting of the song.
